Landslides blocking highways after heavy rainfall

SEATTLE – A weekend storm blasted parts of Western Washington with torrential rain, causing landslides and flooding.

The Transportation Department reported several landslides in the Aberdeen-Hoquiam area, closing highways. Slides were reported on US 12, US 101 and SR 107. Hoquiam received over 6.5 inches of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 6:30 a.m. Monday.

A house in Hoquiam was pushed into the street by a mudslide Resident Tony Osborn said police were evacuating all the homes on that side of the street, which are adjacent to a steep hillside. Osborn said he could hear the sounds of a waterfall and trees uprooted in the darkness.
