The landing gear on a Southwest Airlines jet collapsed as it landed at La Guardia Airport yesterday, sending the Boeing 737 skidding across the runway on its belly as flames and sparks shot into the sky.

The crash landing — which came without warning — terrified the 149 passengers and crew members, who escaped the smoke-filled plane on emergency chutes (above).

A dozen were hospitalized.

“I heard people screaming,” said Evan Schreiber, 24 of Manhattan, who was on the flight. “We didn’t know if the plane was on fire. The captain didn’t come on the PA or anything.”

Steve Czech, who witnessed the crash from a nearby plane, said he saw the aircraft careen on the tarmac. “It was screeching. There was fire coming out on both sides,” he said.
