Man sets himself on fire at National Mall, one witness says his accomplice filmed the entire ordeal: report

The self-immolation left the man with burns on 80% of his body. Witnesses said his body was charred and his arms and face were white.

Police responded to reports of a self-immolation at the National Mall on Friday. The man was rushed to a local hospital by helicopter after using fuel to set himself ablaze near the National Gallery of Art in the middle of the mall, which remains closed due to the U.S. government shutdown.

SOURCE – In a bizarre act that capped a nervous few days in Congress, a man poured gasoline on himself and lit himself on fire on the National Mall late Friday afternoon.

Flames and smoke from the self-immolating man near 7th Street and Jefferson Drive, SW, were visible from the Capitol, where some staffers watched the scene from west facing windows, just a day after a car chase that ended with the shooting death of a woman just outside the Hart Senate Office Building.

The incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday in between the Air and Space Museum and the National Gallery. Passing joggers rushed to the man’s aid, several ripping off their shirts to help beat out the flames that burned 80% of his body, ABC reports.

Members of King family involved in bus accident

28 August 2013

Washington (CNN) — Family members of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. were involved in a bus accident Wednesday after the high-profile ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, police said.

The bus and a car collided near Washington’s Tidal Basin just off the National Mall where the ceremony was held, according to Park Police, who have jurisdiction over the Mall.

They said a person in the car was injured and taken to a hospital but did not provide information on injuries to bus passengers.

Several members of the King family were aboard the bus and had laid a wreath at the memorial to the civil rights leader, according to Omarosa Manigault, a reality television star who was aboard the bus.

“We were very afraid,” she told CNN. “There were children on the bus, seniors and everything. Everybody was thrown out of their seats.”

She said she hit her head in the accident.
