2 hurt in plane crash on UF campus in Gainesville

SOURCE – Two people were injured when a small plane crashed Saturday on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville.

Tthe pilot and a passenger were thrown from the plane and rushed to UF Health Shands Hospital just after 4 p.m., UF said.

Both the pilot and passenger, whose names were not been released, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The pilot was flying a banner over the campus and around the Gainesville area when the plane — a Cessna 172F Skyhawk — lost power, said Major Brad Barber, assistant director for the UF Police Department.

The pilot released the banner off campus and steered the plane toward the Flavet Field, which is southwest of the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium where fans prepared for an evening football game against University of Arkansas.
