Hey, Bible-Thumping Is All They Have Left!

If you haven’t been following the battle between Bill O’Reilly and the rest of the right over the question of whether or not anti-same-sex marriage folks should stop thumping the Bible, you’re in for a treat. Will Saletan describes it here, but in sum, O’Reilly chastised anti-gay activists for advancing really poor “because I said God said so” arguments. Specifically, he said:

The compelling argument is on the side of homosexuals: … ‘We’re Americans. We just want to be treated like everybody else.’ That’s a compelling argument. And to deny that, you’ve got to have a very strong argument on the other side. And the other side hasn’t been able to do anything but thump the Bible.

The ritualized outrage was predictable. Rush Limbaugh wailed and moaned. Other right wing talk thugs followed. Laura Inagraham tried to make the peace, and I’ll let Saletan describe that:

The sniping and smearing finally got to O’Reilly. Last night, he invited fellow talker Laura Ingraham onto his show to hash it out. “When you say you can’t cite the Bible,” she told him, “that’s disrespectful to people who really try to live their lives according to the Bible.” O’Reilly replied that it’s fine to live your life that way—you just can’t cite Scripture to settle policy disputes. Ingraham asked O’Reilly why he had used the word “thump.” He answered that he classifies people as Bible thumpers when “all they do is say, ‘I object to gay marriage because God objects to it.’ ”

Saletan explains to the right the problems with appealing to authority, but really, he needn’t bother. As much as they may squeal bloody murder about this, they know that O’Reilly is right. By and large, the opponents of gay rights have tried to keep their arguments secular. Canvassers supporting Prop 8 were specifically instructed to only trot out the “God said so” line after carefully trying to tease out the voter’s religious beliefs. They know people don’t like having a bunch of pissy Christians lecture them on how God sees marriage as a duty and not as something you do for yourself. They really did try to come up with secular arguments: That marriage is “for” procreation, that some ill-defined horrible thing would happen if same-sex marriage is legalized, and that same-sex marriage would somehow ruin it for straight people. All those arguments were swiftly dismantled by supporters of same-sex marriage.

“God said so” is what comes out of them when they’re under fire and they have no arguments left. It’s may be how they rationalize their bigotry to themselves, but they really do know better than to play that hand first in public. It’s a reaction born out of frustration, nothing more. So when O’Reilly attacks it, I imagine that they feel like he’s trying to take away the only thing they have left. Thus, the lashing out and freaking out at him for saying something they already know is true and already agree with.

Not that I have anything but warm feelings about this. It’s good to see conservatives turn on each other because they feel themselves losing the argument.

Commentary By Gordon King:
After hearing Mr. O’Reilly’s arguments against Christian views on Gay marriage, I just had to make some comments of my own.  I used to like Bill O’Reilly before he started moving to the left.  Over the years it seems that he has become more accepting and even agreeing with the liberal media.

I am outraged by his comments labeling Christians as “Bible Thumpers” with no argument but the Bible!  This is such an injustice it infuriates me!  Take for example the Muslims and their Islamic faith.  They use the Koran to kill people in the name of Allah, persecute non-believers of Allah, use the Koran for all of their arguments including the defense for instituting “Sharia Law”!  Where is the outcry against this!!!   Why wont anyone stand up against them and shout STOP?!  The Muslims are pretty much free to do whatever they wish in the name of Allah and the Koran.  The world seems to accept this as written law and as a just argument.  Most of the world is afraid to speak out against them.  So they let it all happen.  They even support them.  Where is the outcry from our President and other world leaders?  Why is he not speaking out against the heinous crimes and philosophies of this evil religion?

Yet, when moral, decent, peace loving, God loving and fearing Christians use the bible as their reference for moral issues they are denigrated and labeled as “Bible Thumpers”.  Without an argument or viable reason to support their beliefs.  I saw HOGWASH!  All of the good, moral and ethical laws of our country are written directly from biblical scripture.  In my opinion, this is another persecution of Christians and a stand against God Almighty.  There will come a day when these people will bow down before Jesus and have to answer for their rebellion.  Praise God!!!

Rush defends ‘Bible thumpers’ from Bill O’Reilly

SOURCE

This week’s Supreme Court “gay marriage” case is pitting pundit against pundit. After Bill O’Reilly referred to same-sex marriage opponents as “Bible thumpers,” Rush Limbaugh went on the defensive.

Comparing O’Reilly to Ted Baxter, the vain, unpopular anchorman on the old “Mary Tyler Moore Show,” Limbaugh accused the Fox News host of “marginalizing” a good portion of his own audience.

Then Rush blasted another TV commentator, this time MSNBC’s Toure, who Rush said had “smeared” Dr. Ben Carson (FREE audio).

Toure, Limbaugh said, “is a classic example of somebody who is dangerous precisely because of what he thinks he knows that isn’t right, and he took it upon himself to try to destroy Dr. Ben Carson. He did it in a vile, almost uncivilized manner. The things that he said about Ben Carson were just filthy. They were despicable. It was worse than calling him an Uncle Tom.”

Michael Savage

Unlike many in the media, Dr. Savage devoted considerable time to this week’s celebrations of Easter and Passover (FREE audio).

He’s certain that “God can’t believe what’s happened to this country on so many levels. Violence. Pornography. Drugs. And here we are talking about something as trivial as gay marriage.”

Then he offered his own interpretation of the story of Passover: “We are all slaves to our own addictions, wants and lusts. Those are our Egypts. We are in the Egypt of our addictions. We are both the slaves and the slave masters … The Seder is a time to remember that we are all enslaved by ourselves, and we’re supposed to free ourselves.”

Mark Levin

Like Limbaugh, Mark Levin was furious with Bill O’Reilly for dismissing gay marriage opponents as “Bible thumpers” (FREE audio).

“You’re a practicing Catholic,” Levin said of the Fox News host. “Have you heard what your priests have to say, all the way up to the pope? … You sound like Obama with your ‘clinging to your guns and Bible’ line.”

As a constitutional lawyer, Levin is ideally suited to the task of analyzing the Supreme Court case (FREE audio).

He noted that this unelected Court is once again imposing its political will on the rest of America, instead of waiting for citizens to come to a consensus about what direction society should take.

Aaron Klein

As a resident of Israel, Aaron Klein is in the perfect position to provide the most accurate analysis of the president’s recent trip there.

Klein also reveals his latest findings on government surveillance and corruption, all being funded by American tax dollars.

His guests include a forensic analyst who claims to have startling revelations about Obama’s life, and veteran comedian Jackie Mason, who had plenty to say about the president’s trip, as well as about immigration reform and amnesty for illegals (FREE audio).

Laura Ingraham

“Stand tall on marriage.”

That was the advice Dr. John Eastman offered Laura and her listeners this week. The Chairman of the National Organization for Marriage contends that the definition of marriage should not be expanded to gay couples because “homosexual couples cannot procreate” (FREE audio).

Eastman added, “If people demonstrate courage and stand up to the fact that kids are better off with a mom and a dad, then ultimately we’ll be victorious on this issue.”

Glenn Beck

Beck’s audience is set to grow, now that he’s struck a deal with SiriusXM satellite radio.

Hourly updates courtesy of his TheBlaze Radio News have just begun airing on the SiriusXM “Patriot” channel 125. At the same time, channel 778 will become TheBlaze Radio Network, airing The Glenn Beck Program as well as shows by Jay Severin and other hosts.
