Suspected Palestinian assailant shot and seriously hurt; officer reportedly on life support
DRAPER — A Draper police officer was shot and killed Sunday morning and two other adults wounded in a shooting that remained under investigation.
Sgt. Derek Johnson of the Draper Police Department was shot after responding to a call on South Fort Street about 6 a.m. He was transported to Intermountain Medical Center where he died from his injuries, Draper Police Chief Bryan Roberts said in a press conference outside Draper City Hall, just after 11 a.m.
A man and woman, who police did not identify, were also shot in the encounter and remained in critical condition.
“We are here under the most tragic of circumstances,” Roberts said as he prepared to read from a statement.
“This is a very tragic day for the Draper City Police Department. We want to reassure the residents that we are doing everything we can to keep the residents of Draper safe,” he said.
A man is fighting for his life after he was run over by a SEPTA bus in the Nicetown section of the city.
SEPTA officials say a Route R Bus was driving at the intersection of Hunting Park Avenue and Wissahickon when a 60-year-old man began to bang on the rear doors of the vehicle. Officials say the man then slipped and fell under the rear tires which ran over both of his legs.
Police say one of the man’s legs was partially amputated. He was taken to Temple University Hospital where he is in critical condition.
FORT CARSON, Colo. — A lightning strike has injured 12 soldiers at Fort Carson in Colorado, including one who is in critical condition.
Officials at the Army post near Colorado Springs say lightning struck south of the Butts Army Airfield around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. They say the soldiers had been in training but were heading toward shelter when the lightning struck.
Army officials say of the 12 soldiers taken to hospitals, one is in critical condition and the rest are in stable condition.

The Orange County Register says it happened Friday night after a woman bystander tried to break up a fight between two groups at a Huntington Beach skate park.
Police Lt. Chad Nichols says the skateboarders turned on the woman, and her boyfriend intervened and was chased to a nearby coin laundry and beaten with skateboards. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Seven boys under the age of 18 were detained. Four of them were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and were booked at Juvenile Hall.
Authorities say all four were on probation for previous crimes.
BAHAWALPUR: A nine-year-old girl was taken to hospital after she was raped by three men on Wednesday. Doctors treating her said that she was in a critical condition. The medico-legal report confirmed rape.
Airport police have registered a case against seven people for kidnap and rape, five of them have been named by the child’s mother.
The girl had had gone missing from in front of her house on Wednesday morning, and was later abandoned back there in a nearly unconscious state.
Station House Officer Irshad Joyia said that a team had been constituted to arrest the suspects. He said police had been informed that they had fled to Alipur village.
According to the FIR, the girl, a student of class two, was abducted from in front of her house in Manzoorabad in Rahim Yar Khan by three women and a man. She was taken to a dera, where she was raped by three men, one of them identified in the FIR. She was also beaten up before she was abandoned in front of her home.
Her mother told police that she had found the girl near their house. She was bleeding and close to fainting. She said when she was taking her to the police station, when one of the kidnappers stopped her and threatened to kill her if she informed the police.
She said she went back home, but later informed the police.
She said she was told to take the child to Sheikh Zayed Hospital for examination and treatment.
Doctors treating the girl said that her condition was critical due to loss of blood and internal injuries. No one has been arrested yet.
