What did Jesus mean by “Be Ready and Watch”?

Commentary By:  Gordon King

The good Lord Jesus told us to be ready and watching!

My eyes have been opened to some very important truths from scripture, that we must be ready in the last days.
Matthew 24:44
“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
I believe that Jesus wants us to be ready for His return for a couple of reasons.  First to be found ready by having faith in Him when He returns, but I think that there is also another meaning to this, that it goes deeper than this for a reason, something that I really didn’t see before this time.  I believe that He wants us to be ready for the time just before His return for us also.  That we need to be ready for difficult times such as these, that we must be prepared for them, that our faith must be firm through these times in order to be found standing when Christ does come for us.
Matthew 24:36-44
But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.40 Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left.41 Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left.42 Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.44 Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
I believe that all who are born again will be raptured.  However, I know that there are many Christians that are not watching for the rapture.  Perhaps those that are found watching will receive a special blessing from the Lord?
Luke 12:38
“And if he should come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.”
Jesus gave us many warnings of what is to come before the rapture, and I believe that He did that in order to prepare us for what is to come upon the world, the time that we are now living in.  Just as in the days of Noah people were unaccepting of the truth and the flood took them all away, I believe that this is also a reference to the Tribulation period, when God will pour out His wrath upon an unbelieving world.
If we as believers are not ready for what is coming upon this world then we can also be easily led astray.  We can be led to believe lies, we can even be led into apostasy.  Our faith in God and His word is so important during these times, we must strengthen it in order to withstand the wiles of the devil.
We already see many so-called believers falling away from the truth into apostasy, it’s happening in great numbers.  Just how many of these so-called Christians are born again?  I don’t know, but even born again believers can be led astray if we allow ourselves to be!
These times are becoming darker by the day, they don’t seem to be letting up, and I personally do not believe that they are going to get any better.  I don’t see things returning back to “normal”, I don’t believe that it’s going to happen.
As born again Christians how are we to stand during perilous times without a firm foundation?  How are we to stand for the truth if we don’t have a frim grasp of it and on it?  We must know the truth, apply the truth, and believe the truth, if not then we can be easily deceived!
Jesus said that we must be ready and watching for His return for us, and the only way we can be doing that is by having faith in God and His word, and it’s also the only way to not be led astray.
What if we are born again yet are not found watching upon the rapture of the church?  What then?  I don’t know, and I don’t want to find out either!
Don’t be found by God to be not watching for Him upon His return for us, but rather be found ready and watching!  It’s a good thing in many ways.
God bless my friends!  Maranatha!
