What awaits us on the Other Side?

Commentary By:  Gordon King

Most of us get so caught up in the affairs of this world that we tend to neglect just what awaits us on the other side.  For believers in Jesus Christ we can only imagine what God has in store for us, but I can imagine that it must be just awesome!

The good Lord told us that in His Father’s house are many mansions, and He goes to prepare a place for us, that where He is we may be also.

John 14:1-4

Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

Jesus Christ left this planet close to two thousand years ago, and if He has been preparing this place for us for that long I really can’t imagine just what it must be like.  If He were just a man it would still be amazing, but as God and a carpenter to boot it must really be spectacular to say the very least!

We know from reading the book of Revelation that there will be a New Jerusalem coming down from heaven.

Revelation 21:1-4

‘Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” ‘

After the one thousand year reign of Christ on earth He will destroy the heaven and the earth and create new ones.  Then shall the New Jerusalem come down from heaven on this new earth.  This shall be the dwelling place for the children of God, and the tabernacle of God will be with them and God Himself will be with them, forever!

How great is that?!  And could it be that this New Jerusalem will be our dwelling place once we get to heaven?  I believe that it could be.  So what does this New Jerusalem look like?

Revelation 21:10-27

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. 12 Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: 13 three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west.

14 Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. 15 And he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. 16 The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. 17 Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. 18 The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. 19 The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. 21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

The Glory of the New Jerusalem

22 But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. 24 And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. 25 Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). 26 And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”

This city is very, very large my friends, its length, breadth, and height are equal, that’s 12,000 furlongs, or approximately 1,500 miles in each direction, including the height.  That is 1,500 x 1,500 x 1,500 miles.

To put that into perspective the following is from the Blue Letter Bible and written by the late Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Twelve thousand furlongs is 1,378.97 miles — roughly fifteen hundred miles. It is fifteen hundred miles long, fifteen hundred miles wide, and fifteen hundred miles high. Some men have concluded that it will be a cube; others see it as a pyramid. It is difficult to conceive of either a cube or pyramid projected out in space. Cubes and pyramids are appropriate for earth’s buildings but are impractical for space, as spheres are impractical for earthly buildings. I cannot believe that, since God has made everything in space globe-shaped, He would make this square. I do not say this in a dogmatic fashion, for there are many fine Bible students who disagree with me, but I believe that the New Jerusalem is a sphere and these measurements that Scripture gives are the dimensions on the inside of the sphere, a cube within a crystal-clear sphere. I took this problem in solid geometry to a man in the field of theoretical engineering. He worked it out for me and came up with a sphere that is slightly larger than our moon. The diameter of the moon is about 2,160 miles, and that of the New Jerusalem sphere is about 2,600 miles. We live on the outside of the planet called earth, but if my theory is correct, our eternal home will be within the planet called the New Jerusalem.

That is very interesting, I never before thought of the New Jerusalem as being anything other than a cube, but perhaps he is right, perhaps it is a sphere, and perhaps it is like another planet, it is after-all larger than the moon.  But could it actually be the new earth?  John said that he saw a new heaven and a new earth, then goes on to say that he saw the New Jerusalem coming down from heaven, so I don’t believe that they are the same, but no one knows for sure.

Whatever it looks like it will be more beautiful than anything we have ever before seen!  Adorned with precious stones, and colors that we have never seen before, radiant, brilliant, and lit by the light of God Himself!  There shall be no need for the lights of the moon or the sun because the light of God will shine upon it.  The streets will be pure gold like transparent glass.  And the city will be filled with the glory of God!  I can’t even imagine just what it will be like, for I know that when I see it that it will be so much better than I could have ever imagined!  No more tears, no more pain, no more suffering!

That’s only the beginning my friends, that’s only our dwelling place.  But God has created so much more, an entire universe!

Revelation 21:7

“He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. “

The Lord tells us that we shall inherit “all things”, meaning that all He has also belongs to us.  Doesn’t that then include the entire universe?  Could you imagine exploring the entire universe?  Not only our own solar system or galaxy, but billions or trillions of others as well!  Wow!  Only God knows what’s out there, and we as His children have inherited what belongs to Him.  I’m not sure how it’s going to work, but wouldn’t it be so awesome if we could travel around the universe and explore what the Lord has created?!

And lets not forget that after Christ comes physically back to earth that we will be ruling and reigning with Him for one thousand years!  We will have glorified bodies, bodies that can walk through walls, we can still eat, and we will be able to do things that are unimaginable to us now.

So what will it be like in heaven?  I know that we will be eating, we will take part in the marriage and marriage supper of the Lamb.  I believe that heaven will be so much more than we could ever imagine that I’m not even going to speculate at this point.  And we will meet other believers from thousands of years ago and all along the way.

But the best thing is that we shall be with God, in the presence of the Lord, forever!

This is our hope, these are the promises of God Himself.  And as the world gets darker we must always remember the promises of God, we should focus on God and heaven up above.  Ours is not of this world but of the kingdom of God, and He is coming soon to take us home!

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!

  1. Thank you Gordon, I am really looking forward to being with The Lord and seeing everything that He has prepared for us. It will be so beautiful, when you think of streets of pure gold so pure they look like glass it is awe inspiring!

    God bless

  2. Thanks for your comment Watching68!

I’ve talked about this before, just before I started this blog God healed me of severe depression, I’m talking about suicidal depression. I fell to my knees actually crying out to God to please help me! With tears running down my face I immediately felt the presence of God upon me, I actually felt His anointing upon and within me. It was so beautiful and indescribable. I felt God’s love surrounding me and running through me, through my entire being. I felt just a small piece of the glory of God Himself! And if that was just a glimpse of what heaven will be like then I really can’t imagine just how wonderful it will be!!!

This is the original post that I wrote about feeling God’s love, I wrote it back in December of 2012.

    …………Love………..Do You Feel It!

We really have no idea of just how great being with God is going to be, it is beyond any words or feelings!

    God bless sister! Maranatha! Gordon
