Commentary By: Gordon King
So many people have been dissuaded by Christians from believing in God that it breaks my heart. There are many Christians that are not actually following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ and are instead following the world. This in and of itself is enough to deter many from knowing the one and only true God of the universe, Jesus Christ!
It’s difficult for many to see the truth of God through Christians that are not walking with the Lord, for they do not see any difference in them and those of the secular world. Instead of seeing God for who He truly is, they look to believers for whom they seem to be. This my friends is a tragedy and a shame.
There are many types of Christians in this world, there are those I would label as “So-called Christians”, these are the ones who profess to be Christians yet have never been truly saved or born-again.
1 John 2:19
“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.”
Then there are Christians that follow the footsteps of the world instead of the footsteps of Jesus Christ, I would label them as “Carnal Christians”, they have been saved, however they are following the world, they are babes in Christ, never fully learning, never fully understanding, they are weak in the faith.
1 Corinthians 3:1-3
“And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk and not with solid food; for until now you were not able to receive it, and even now you are still not able; 3 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men?”
And then we have Christians who are true to the word of God, they do follow the footsteps of Jesus, they are walking in the spirit and not the flesh, I would call them “Spirit filled Christians”, seeking the things of God, they are mature in Christ. With all of the being said, no one is perfect, not even the last group that I mentioned, all of us will sin, and we all battle between the spirit and the flesh.
“Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
15 Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you.”
There is another group that I have not mentioned, and those are the believers that have turned away from the faith, they are “Apostate Christians”. They are the ones who have left the truth for lies, they also follow the teachings of the world rather than the teachings of God.
1 Timothy 4:1
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons,”
The world seems to believe that being a Christian means that a person is perfect, that he or she will never sin, this couldn’t be further from the truth my friends!
1 John 1:8
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
It’s not a matter of “have we sinned”, it’s a matter of “what’s been done about our sin?” Christians are not perfect, no not one, but we have been forgiven of all sin, past, present, and yes, even future! Amen.
Let us not confuse what being a Christian is with perfection, only God is perfect, yet one day all believers will be made perfect as Christ is perfect. With that being said, as believers in Jesus Christ we are to be like Christ, to follow in His footsteps, to do as He did when He physically walked the earth.
1 John 2:6
“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.”
We should be setting an example for unbelievers and yes even other believers who are weak in the faith. They look to us as to what it truly means to be a Christian, to be born-again. And if they see us following the world instead of following Christ then what does that say about being born-again? They see no difference between the saved and the unsaved.
I believe that unfortunately there is only a remnant of believers who are walking with the Lord, Christians that I can truly say are “Spirit Filled Believers”. They believe that the entire bible is the true and living word of God, that it is God breathed, that it is holy inspired by God Himself, that there is no error in it to be found, that it is not allegorical but the truth! They love God with all of their heart, they seek God in all things, they trust in the Lord, and they follow in the footsteps of Christ!
Does this then mean that these Christians never sin? No! Of course not. But they do not live their lives in sin, they at times sin, they repent of it, and they turn to God for the remission of their sins. They seek the will of God in their lives and not their own.
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 2:1-2
“My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.”
The good Lord is faithful and true, and He removes our sins from us forever!
“As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.”
We are in a battle in this world, not only a battle between the spirit and the flesh,
“For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.”
but also a battle between the children of God and evil spirits!
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
This is the battle that we are in my friends, a battle between the spirits, a battle of helping to save the lost from eternal darkness. It’s not an easy battle, it requires faith and trust in the Lord, it requires us to be performing God’s will on earth as it is in heaven. Satan and his minions are out against us, they will use everything in their power to stop people from accepting the Lord, and yes, even use us if at all possible.
This is something that those of the world don’t see, and even many Christians don’t see, the enemy using even believers as a tool against God’s will and even each other. His is to steal, kill, and destroy!
What most people don’t see is that it’s not about any of us, it’s all about God and what He has already done for us all! That’s what it’s all about, it’s about God’s love for us, it’s about us loving Him back, it’s about us trusting in Him and not man! God is seeking each and everyone of us, He is searching our hearts, and He is reaching out to us on a daily basis.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
2 Peter 3:9
“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
God’s will is for all to come to repentance and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior!
If there would be one thing that I could tell everyone it would be to trust in God and not man! Do not look at the outward appearance and actions of man, but look to the unconditional love of God Almighty! Do not trust in man but trust wholly in God! It’s not about what man does or doesn’t do, it’s all about God, what He has done, what He is doing, and what He will do! And this is where people stumble, they seek the actions of man, they seek after the will and acceptance of man instead of the acceptance and will of the one and only true God of this universe, Jesus Christ!
We live in a fallen world, a world full of sin and deceit, and yes, even believers in Jesus Christ at times fall to sin, but that does not mean that they are not born-again, that they are not truly children of God. What it does mean is that even Christians sometimes fall to sin, that none of us are perfect, and if you look to man for perfection then you will always be disappointed!
Seek God, love the Lord, repent of your sins, and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, it’s the only way to heaven, the only way into God’s kingdom, the only way to have eternal life!
God bless my friends! Maranatha!
