We are told to Rightly Divide the Word of Truth! But are we?

Commentary By:  Gordon King

I don’t know about you but I see so many so-called Christians interpreting the bible erroneously.  They are not rightly dividing the word of God correctly, but why is that?  Perhaps it’s because they just don’t want to, because of their preconceived ideas, opinions, and biases, or maybe it’s because they are not taking the time to search out the scriptures, or they have been influenced incorrectly by other believers, and it could be that many of them are doing it purposely and maliciously, and there are those who innocently mislead due to just not understanding correctly, and some are merely impatient and jump to conclusions.  Whatever the case may be, the bible clearly tells us not to teach others incorrectly regarding God’s word, but it also tells us to rightly divide the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The apostle Paul tells us in his letter to Timothy that we need to be diligent in presenting ourselves approved to God by rightly dividing the word of truth, thereby being a worker who does not need to be ashamed.  On the contrary if we are not rightly dividing the word of God then we are to be ashamed!

However, it seems that so many are in fact not rightly dividing the word of God and in fact are not ashamed in doing so!  This to me is a disgrace and at the very least a disservice to our Lord and Creator.  And I would say that it is on the verge of being labeled as teaching the doctrines of demons!

1 Timothy 6:20

O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— 21 by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.

We are told to “rightly divide the word of truth” and if we do not then they are contradictions of the truth, contradictions of true knowledge!  If we profess these things then we are straying from the faith.  And if we teach anything other than the truth then we are teaching the doctrines of demons.

1 Timothy 4:1-2

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,

We are told in scripture to take heed to ourselves and to the doctrine.

1 Timothy 4:16

Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

What does the apostle Paul mean by this?  He means that we need to be very careful in how we divide the word of truth, he goes on to say that we need to continue on in rightly dividing the truth because in doing so we will save ourselves and those who hear us (he is speaking to believers).  He doesn’t mean that we can save ourselves from hell, but that we do not stray from the faith and fall into evil ways, because we can be deceived and fall astray!  The apostle Paul is teaching Timothy what the doctrines are as to how we should treat one another, continue reading chapter 5 and 6.

He goes on to say that if anyone teaches anything otherwise and does not consent to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ and to His doctrines then he is proud and knowing nothing, and that we should withdraw ourselves from them.

1 Timothy 6:3-5

If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself.

So now we know that it’s against the Lord our God to teach what is against His doctrines and His words, there shouldn’t be any argument about that, it’s clearly stated in scripture to avoid such things and the people who do so.  So all of us should be very, very careful as to making sure that we are rightly dividing the word of truth!

There are many so-called Christians that teach things which are unbiblical such as God being done with the Jews and the church replacing them, the bible never ever says such things.  Or that the “Abomination of Desolation” has already occurred, that there is no rapture of the church, that there are many ways to heaven, that we are living in God’s kingdom now, that the one thousand year reign of Christ will not happen, etc, etc, etc!

Really?!!!  First of all, if God were done with the Jews then He would have told us that in the bible, but He didn’t never!  In fact, He did say that He would save a remnant of them in the end times.

Zechariah 12:10

And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.

Ezekiel 37:14

And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.

The apostle Paul also tells us this in the book of Romans.

Romans 11:1-2

I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew.…”

It’s very clear that God is not done with the Jews, the bible tells us this over and over and over again!  You would have to be blind not to see it, yet so many believers just cannot see it for some reason!

How about the Abomination of Desolation already happening?  How could this have already happened if Jesus Christ Himself told us that it would be something that would happen in the last days?

Matthew 24:15-22

Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.

This is the beginning of the Great Tribulation, the middle of the Tribulation period.  It sure hasn’t happened since Christ walked the earth, if it has then where is the Antichrist or the Mark of the Beast?  Where is the son of perdition that the apostle Paul spoke of in 2 Thessalonians 2?  The apostle Paul says that our gathering together with Christ (the rapture of the church by the way!) will not come until the falling away comes first, and after He who now restrains is taken out of the way (a reference I believe is the rapture of the Holy Spirit filled church), and then the lawless one (the son of perdition) will be revealed, the one “who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God (2 Thessalonians 2:4).”  This is the Abomination of Desolation!

As far as there not being a Rapture of the Church, well, I pretty much explained when it will happen in the preceding verses!  And the bible is very explicit regarding this event.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

1 Corinthians 15:51-53

Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

As far as there being many ways to heaven, well Jesus Christ Himself told us that He is the only way!

John 14:6

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” ‘

The kingdom now theology is not in scripture either, if it were true then I am immensely disappointed!  If it were the truth then where is Jesus Christ?  He is supposed to be ruling and reigning from Jerusalem, I haven’t seen Him there have you?!  Where is the New Jerusalem, why hasn’t God wiped away every tear, why is the world such a mess, I could go on and on and on, it just isn’t true!  The people that believe this also believe that we are supposed to cleanse the earth and the world, but the bible never says this, and if this were the case then it goes against what God tells us, that Jesus Christ is the only one that can save us from ourselves.

How about the One Thousand Year Reign of Christ on earth?

Revelation 20:4-6

And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

The bible explicitly states that Christ will reign on earth for one thousand years after He comes back a second time.  We can take this literally as I do, or we can say that it is merely spiritual, but the bible does not allude to this time period as being spiritual so we must take it as being literal.  As a matter of fact, the bible goes on to tell us what will happen at the end of the one thousand years.

Revelation 20:7-10

Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea. They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them. 10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

This doesn’t sound like something that only happens in the spirit, but an actual real life event!

The point is my friends is that we can interpret the bible to mean all sorts of things, but are they the truth?  And if they are not the truth then we are not only deceiving ourselves but others as well.  Therefore we are not doing God a service but a disservice if we lead people astray.  God told us things in the bible that He wants us to know, He has a reason for it, and if we do not rightly divide His word then we will never know what He wanted us to know in the first place!

None of us know all things, all of us are still learning from God’s word, and over time hopefully we will learn new things about God and gain more understanding of the truth thereby further building our relationship with our Creator, Jesus Christ!  When the apostle Paul told us that we need to take heed to ourselves, I believe that he meant for us to take our time and make sure that we really understand God’s doctrines before we teach things which are contrary to God’s word.  I know that for myself, I am very conscious about my understanding of scripture, and that I check myself over and over again before I post things on this blog.  But none of us are perfect and at times I make mistakes just like everyone else does.

Let us all pray for wisdom and enlightenment, for understanding, and to be able to rightly divide the word of truth!  Amen.

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!
