Apostasy, what does it really mean?
Definition of Apostasy by Merriam-Webster:
1 : an act of refusing to continue to follow, obey, or recognize a religious faith. 2 : abandonment of a previous loyalty : defection.
Definition of Apostasy by Bible Study Tools:
I.e. a falling away, a withdrawal, a defection.
So I believe that we can safely say that apostasy as used in the bible means to fall away from the faith, to withdraw from previously held beliefs of the truth, to abandon the truth of the faith that we learned from scripture. Basically the way I see it, it means to replace the truth of scripture with untruths from the world or from other religions, or just not believing the truth from scripture anymore and abandoning it.
A common end time sign of the last days is apostasy, the turning away from and abandoning of the faith. The apostles told us that this would happen in the last days.
1 Timothy 4:1-2
“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,“
How many Christians do you know that don’t believe the entire bible to be the truth? How many of them believe much of it to be allegorical? I know of many, and it really shocks me that they don’t believe it as the truth! Not only that, but how many believe lies and untruths that are not even written in scripture?
2 Timothy 4:3-4
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.“
Many Christians today believe that there are many ways to heaven, some don’t even believe that Jesus Christ is God, and some believe that Satan is not a real being but merely used as a metaphor! There are even believers who don’t believe in a literal heaven or hell!
2 Timothy 3:1-5
“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power.“
How many Christians have a form of godliness but deny His power? I know of many believers who don’t really believe that God has the power to help them, that God can and will perform miracles in their lives, that God will supernaturally help them in performing His will. They say that they believe in God but they don’t believe in His power!
2 Peter 2:1-3
“But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.“
Then there are those who have become false teachers and false prophets, bringing destructive heresies, using deceiving words, and leading many astray from the truth! I have heard many, many preachers teaching lies and untruths as if they were straight from scripture, however the words they use from scripture have been twisted and tainted to have a different meaning then what they originally did! Many believers have itching ears, desiring to hear things which are pleasing to them rather than hearing the truth!
2 Thessalonians 2:3
“Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,“
Some people say that this “the falling away” is the apostasy of the church, while others claim that it is the rapture of the church, but couldn’t it be both?
What is obvious to me is that the end times, the times just before the return of Jesus Christ will be the apostasy of the church. Not only that, but I also believe that this apostasy will happen as a woman giving birth, it will increase in both frequency and intensity the closer we get to Christ’s return!
Another thing that I have noticed and is widespread throughout the church, at least here in America, is the avoidance of teaching bible prophecy. The bible is about 30% prophecy, yet most pastors refuse to preach on the subject, but why? I thought that as believers we are to learn and study all of scripture, so why the avoidance of bible prophecy?
“Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.“
God tells us that the person who reads, hears, and keeps the things written in the book of Revelation will be blessed. So why in the world wouldn’t all pastors be teaching bible prophecy?! If pastors refuse or just fail to teach bible prophecy are they then considered apostates? I don’t know, but I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes! The point is that the lack of bible prophecy being taught in the church is widespread, and at a time when the church most needs to hear about it because it’s happening all around us on a daily basis!
How many Christians are there that believe the whole bible is the inspired written word of God? How many believe that Jesus Christ is God and that He is the only way to heaven? How many believe that Satan is real, that heaven and hell are real places? How many believe that the things written in scripture really happened and are not allegorical, such as the parting of the Red Sea, of Jesus feeding the masses from five loaves of bread and two small fish, of Jesus turning water into wine, of Jesus raising the dead, of Jonah being swallowed by a great fish, that giants existed on earth, that the story of Noah is true fact? How many believe that the Jews are still God’s chosen people and that God has not abandoned them? How many believe that all of the prophecies written in scripture will come to pass with 100% accuracy? How many believe in the rapture of the church? How many believe that God has the power to do all things, that He still performs miracles today just as He did thousands of years ago? I don’t know about you but I believe all of these things, and if you do also then you are a part of a small remnant of the church that does too!
So many in the church have abandoned the faith, they have fallen away from the truth, they have been led to believe the doctrines of demons! And we are told by the apostles thousands of years ago that these things would happen in the last days, and they are!
It’s difficult being a God fearing, bible believing, child of God Almighty these days when so many other believers don’t even believe what God tells them is the truth! When not only the world rejects and pushes you aside but other Christians do as well! I cannot tell you how many times I have been criticized, judged, and belittled by other believers because of my beliefs in God’s word, so many that it absolutely astounds me!
This is the apostasy of the church my friends, when a good portion of it has fallen away from the truth, when they have been led to believe lies, when they choose to follow the doctrines of demons rather than the word of God Almighty!
Do not be led astray, stay in God’s word, know the truth, allow the Holy Spirit to discern right from wrong, good from bad, and the truth from lies! Stay grounded upon the Rock of your Salvation, Jesus Christ. Strive to know the truth, even if it hurts, even if it doesn’t tickle itching ears, for the truth shall set you free, but lies will only enslave you to more lies and untruths leading to destruction! The apostasy of the church is evil and wicked, and it’s led by satanic forces.
Apostasy, it’s a major sign of the end times, it’s here, it’s now, and it’s only getting worse!
God bless my friends! Maranatha!
