The Apostasy of the Church! A Major Sign of the End Times!

Commentary By:  Gordon King

Apostasy, what does it really mean?

Definition of Apostasy by Merriam-Webster:

1 : an act of refusing to continue to follow, obey, or recognize a religious faith. 2 : abandonment of a previous loyalty : defection.

Definition of Apostasy by Bible Study Tools:

I.e. a falling away, a withdrawal, a defection.

So I believe that we can safely say that apostasy as used in the bible means to fall away from the faith, to withdraw from previously held beliefs of the truth, to abandon the truth of the faith that we learned from scripture.  Basically the way I see it, it means to replace the truth of scripture with untruths from the world or from other religions, or just not believing the truth from scripture anymore and abandoning it.

A common end time sign of the last days is apostasy, the turning away from and abandoning of the faith.  The apostles told us that this would happen in the last days.

1 Timothy 4:1-2

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,

How many Christians do you know that don’t believe the entire bible to be the truth?  How many of them believe much of it to be allegorical?  I know of many, and it really shocks me that they don’t believe it as the truth!  Not only that, but how many believe lies and untruths that are not even written in scripture?

2 Timothy 4:3-4

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

Many Christians today believe that there are many ways to heaven, some don’t even believe that Jesus Christ is God, and some believe that Satan is not a real being but merely used as a metaphor!  There are even believers who don’t believe in a literal heaven or hell!

2 Timothy 3:1-5

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power.

How many Christians have a form of godliness but deny His power?  I know of many believers who don’t really believe that God has the power to help them, that God can and will perform miracles in their lives, that God will supernaturally help them in performing His will.  They say that they believe in God but they don’t believe in His power!

2 Peter 2:1-3

But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.

Then there are those who have become false teachers and false prophets, bringing destructive heresies, using deceiving words, and leading many astray from the truth!  I have heard many, many preachers teaching lies and untruths as if they were straight from scripture, however the words they use from scripture have been twisted and tainted to have a different meaning then what they originally did!  Many believers have itching ears, desiring to hear things which are pleasing to them rather than hearing the truth!

2 Thessalonians 2:3

Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition,

Some people say that this “the falling away” is the apostasy of the church, while others claim that it is the rapture of the church, but couldn’t it be both?

What is obvious to me is that the end times, the times just before the return of Jesus Christ will be the apostasy of the church.  Not only that, but I also believe that this apostasy will happen as a woman giving birth, it will increase in both frequency and intensity the closer we get to Christ’s return!

Another thing that I have noticed and is widespread throughout the church, at least here in America, is the avoidance of teaching bible prophecy.  The bible is about 30% prophecy, yet most pastors refuse to preach on the subject, but why?  I thought that as believers we are to learn and study all of scripture, so why the avoidance of bible prophecy?

Revelation 1:3

Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near.

God tells us that the person who reads, hears, and keeps the things written in the book of Revelation will be blessed.  So why in the world wouldn’t all pastors be teaching bible prophecy?!  If pastors refuse or just fail to teach bible prophecy are they then considered apostates?  I don’t know, but I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes!  The point is that the lack of bible prophecy being taught in the church is widespread, and at a time when the church most needs to hear about it because it’s happening all around us on a daily basis!

How many Christians are there that believe the whole bible is the inspired written word of God?  How many believe that Jesus Christ is God and that He is the only way to heaven?  How many believe that Satan is real, that heaven and hell are real places?  How many believe that the things written in scripture really happened and are not allegorical, such as the parting of the Red Sea, of Jesus feeding the masses from five loaves of bread and two small fish, of Jesus turning water into wine, of Jesus raising the dead, of Jonah being swallowed by a great fish, that giants existed on earth, that the story of Noah is true fact?  How many believe that the Jews are still God’s chosen people and that God has not abandoned them?  How many believe that all of the prophecies written in scripture will come to pass with 100% accuracy?  How many believe in the rapture of the church?  How many believe that God has the power to do all things, that He still performs miracles today just as He did thousands of years ago?  I don’t know about you but I believe all of these things, and if you do also then you are a part of a small remnant of the church that does too!

So many in the church have abandoned the faith, they have fallen away from the truth, they have been led to believe the doctrines of demons!  And we are told by the apostles thousands of years ago that these things would happen in the last days, and they are!

It’s difficult being a God fearing, bible believing, child of God Almighty these days when so many other believers don’t even believe what God tells them is the truth!  When not only the world rejects and pushes you aside but other Christians do as well!  I cannot tell you how many times I have been criticized, judged, and belittled by other believers because of my beliefs in God’s word, so many that it absolutely astounds me!

This is the apostasy of the church my friends, when a good portion of it has fallen away from the truth, when they have been led to believe lies, when they choose to follow the doctrines of demons rather than the word of God Almighty!

Do not be led astray, stay in God’s word, know the truth, allow the Holy Spirit to discern right from wrong, good from bad, and the truth from lies!  Stay grounded upon the Rock of your Salvation, Jesus Christ.  Strive to know the truth, even if it hurts, even if it doesn’t tickle itching ears, for the truth shall set you free, but lies will only enslave you to more lies and untruths leading to destruction!  The apostasy of the church is evil and wicked, and it’s led by satanic forces.

Apostasy, it’s a major sign of the end times, it’s here, it’s now, and it’s only getting worse!

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!

  1. I agree with you Gordon and for me it has been easier to be outside the walls so to speak of Churchianity and find fellowship with other brothers and sisters who stand on the truth of The word of God in it’s entirety, even if for the most par that has not been face to face fellowship. I have found another small Church fellowship that meets near my home that I am going to visit, I don’t know how long I will be able to stay.

    God bless you
    Maranatha!

  2. Paul Washer once made a point in one of his sermons, and it is a point I will echo here. There is no remnant of the Church, there is just the Church. She is small, beleaguered, and surrounded on all sides by those who would devour her, but she is the Church. The Church is made up of all of those whom are blood bought and sold, the ones who know that the Bible is the inerrant Word, who know that God is real, that Jesus is Lord, that heaven, hell, Satan, angels, and demons are all in existence. The rest are nothing more than pretenders, wolves in sheeps clothing, the lost whom are being spoon-fed honey and kept blindfolded so that they don’t see the prison cell they presently occupy until it’s too late. Sadly, those pretenders are who the world sees when they hear “Christian”, not us.

There may not be a remnant of the church, however there is a remnant of believers who believe what I have talked about believing. Believers can fall away, and I truly believe that scripture is telling us that a significant portion of the church in the end times will fall away into apostasy. There are those who never really were saved, however, there are those who have been saved and fall away, that is who I believe the bible is talking about here. How can a person fall into apostasy if he or she was never saved in the first place? Apostasy is falling away from the faith, abandoning the faith, you cannot abandon something that you never had in the first place. I’m not suggesting that believers will lose their salvation, I don’t believe that we can. However, we can be deceived, we can follow the doctrines of demons, the bible warns us of this over and over again.

      God bless! Maranatha!

      • You make a good case, brother. I’ve always seen the great apostasy as the pretenders finally falling away, and leaving only the true Church. Your way is just as likely.

  3. I swear to God, I have lost several Christian friends because they don’t wanted to hear about end times and prophecy. When or if I were invited to the events, I was told NOT to bringing it up about the prophecy and end times.

When I looking at those people, they are living joy of their lifestyles because they are rich. They have a beautiful homes, fancy cars, jewelry, clothes, etc.

When they have Bible studies, they refused to talking about the Book of Revelation or anything has to do with end times. They singing, they studied like psychology from the Bible, etc. Hard to explain.

Pacific Northwest are one of the worse in the nation among of the less attended to churches.

    • Thanks for your comment Jim!

The world is a mess my friend, and even the church is greatly effected by the world and satanic influence. It’s a very sad thing when believers don’t want to hear, read, or study bible prophecy!

      God bless! Maranatha!

  4. So true my friend. The trustworthy prophetic word is deluded in today society, in today’s churches, for the ‘feel good’ doctrines. Although some preachers might have good intentions for God is love. But God is also justice and knows what works, what harmonizes to have a peaceful existence. The prophecies shows us what to expect, look for, be warned about in an ever growing hostile world. Showing the defection of the truth can bring. There are so many destructive doctrines that misrepresent true Bible text, a.k.a. God’s inspired word. And this fact has brought us to this stage in this world’s drama, of evil pushing goodness, righteousness, goodwill to oblivion, with lies and innuendos. We are so programmed, manipulated to accept bad behavior by the stuff we see on t.v; in movies, internet, etc. What gets me is that people are okay with this violence on personal responsibility and blinded to the realities that is evident in taking our Geo-Christian values out of society. We find ourselves lost and churches not addressing the core issue(s). And when there’s a void, something has to fill it…

With this ‘falling away’ from God’s ordinances, His laws we find ourselves in different corners. Yet, if we’re honest with ourselves, deep down we know, feel something is missing, something is wrong that we just can put a finger on it. Why..? because it’s spiritual. We would realize it stems from our spirit not quite harmonizing with what the world is telling us. God speaking to us to come back to Him.
Should any oppose this realization they/we are ridicule or worst for their/our beliefs. How double-minded. Last I checked we all have the freedom to choose to believe and be united in our beliefs. Not chastised for them. The freedoms this country offers has been hijacked to represent something its not.
Unfortunately, as you have stated, and Scripture’s attest things will get worst as we get closer to our Lord’s return.

Sound doctrines as both God’s word and your post illustrates is not accepted because it shows their evil intent, and where this evil ends up. They don’t want to listen and so avoid the obvious, discarding the truth for it stings their worldly perceptions. We must stand up to truth in the face of adversity. And if words doesn’t penetrate the mind and hearts of individuals then our actions must, not in violence, discord or hatred but in love, humility in being examples of that love. Being Christ-like in the face of opposition. Our life reflecting Jesus’. We must walk the walk not just talk. It’s not always easy but with God’s grace it’s possible. Prophecy is coming to fruition and God’s words never fail.

Thank you for always bringing this subject up. Can’t be said enough, we need to go back to our first love. The Father of love for He IS love.
Pray God continues to bless you, abundantly. Maranatha!

    • Thanks for your comment thelostcoinblog (Aida)!

I appreciate your kind words. Satan is hard at work deceiving especially those who have a heart for God, they are his main target. Anything he can do to try and separate us from God is his mission. One thing that I don’t understand about what you said is the term “Geo-Christian values”, I’ve never before heard that, is it something new or am I just ignorant? I’ve heard of Judeo-Christian values, but not Geo-Christian, it sounds a little New Agey to me.

      God bless! Maranatha!

      • My apologies Gordon, I meant Judeo-Christian values. My thoughts was running away from me, I missed reading and spell checking before I hit the send button. And no you’re not ignorant or it being a religious word. I can see were it can be construed as new Age-y, and for this I apologize.
Funny though, how geo stands for earth, land; Geo- definition, a combining form meaning “the earth,” used in the formation of word-forming element meaning “earth,” like geography.
Subconsciously I was thinking (and you mentioned), Satan’s deceitfulness on our world.
Thank you for clarifying my error, lesson learned.
        God bless you! 🙂

  5. Blessings Gordon and thank you for your post and your site. This is so true and we should not be surprised by what is happening in the church since it was prophesied in the Bible but that doesn’t make it any easier to see it and live through it. All I can say is come quickly Lord Jesus!
    God bless you brother, Lindy.

    • Thanks for your comment christianidentityblog!

You are most welcome sister! Many believers don’t believe what is happening in the church today, they don’t believe that there is a falling away of believers, yet we see it everyday. And even though it is written in scripture they still don’t believe it, they say that it’s not talking about the saved but those that are unsaved. However, the very definition of apostasy is the falling away from the faith, a person cannot fall away from something that they never had faith in to begin with!

      God bless! Maranatha!
