More Trials and Tribulations?!!!

Commentary By:  Gordon King

Life has its ups and downs, but it seems to be unbalanced in favor of more downs then ups, at least for me!  Why is that?  Have I messed up so bad that I must endure more and more trials and tribulations?  Is my character that flawed that I must be tested over and over again?

We are told by Christ that in this life we will have tribulation, the apostles tell us that we will endure various trials and tribulations.

James 1:2-3

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”

Romans 5:3-4

And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.

As believers in Jesus Christ we will go through trials and tribulations, they are the testing of our faith, producing in us patience, perseverance, character, and hope.  The apostle James told us to count it as all joy when we fall into various trials.

But why does it seem like some of us go through many more trials and tribulations than others?!  I know that for myself I seem to be going through trial after fiery trial!  What gives?

Perhaps I just need much more testing than other believers!  It may just be that I am so much of a mess that the Lord needs to continually test my faith and build my character.  I understand that I have been saved by faith in Christ and justified by His blood, that I am in the process of being sanctified which involves going through trials and tribulations in order to build my faith, character, and hope, I understand that, but why trial after trial?!

It may seem to myself that I am going through more trials and tribulations than most, however this may not be the case, and if you feel the same way about yourself then it just may not be the case for you either, at least not to the extent that we believe.

We need to take a step back and look at some believers who really had a rough time, the apostles.  They were strong in their faith and beliefs, yet they went through some very, very difficult trials and tribulations!  In fact, they were severely persecuted for their faith in Christ to their death.  When we look at things from this perspective then we can see things much differently, and most of us can see that we don’t have it nearly as bad as we thought we did.  However, that is not to say that there are not many believers who are suffering as the apostles did.

If the apostles went through trial after fiery trial did that mean that they were not close to God?  Does it mean that they had major character flaws?  No, of course not!  But they did go through many, many trials, very difficult trials up until their death.

Why do we go through so many trials in our life?  I don’t know.  Why do trials and tribulations seem to keep happening over and over again to some of us?  I don’t know that either!  I don’t know why the good Lord puts us through so many trials and tribulations, nor do I completely understand all of His ways.  But what I do know is that the people who were the closest to Jesus Christ went through some of the most difficult trials and tribulations ever!  I know that if I suffer trials and tribulations in this life that I am in good company!  I also know that what I have suffered in this life is nothing compared to what others have suffered before me, including my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

And while we go through trials and tribulations in this life we must remember that we have God with us!  That He is always at our side, that His Spirit is within us, that we follow Jesus Christ who has already overcome.  We can go through difficult times in this life and still have peace within us, a peace that only comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ.

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!

  1. Hi Gordon dear brother,
I was only thinking thinking of Job and his fiery trials this morning and how his friends/ acquaintances and close ones became like the devils advocate to him at times.
I then got to thinking about the thoughts I was having along the same lines as yourself this morning. I was battling with temptation upon temptation to grumble / complain about trials and yes even as Job’s friends suggested to curse and die! Wow, I then realised we are sometimes assaulted with those thoughts from the enemy and they are as Job’s friends and accusers to us that are suffering in a season of trials and we must resist them in Jesus name and ask the Lord to rebuke our enemy.
It was a light bulb moment for me because it is not always the physical trial that causes the most suffering , and they who accuse and scoff and cajole us into temptations to rebelling in our trials don’t always have bodies like Job’s did so we don’t recognise where those suggestions are coming from when we are in the thick of it and weary, we think it is from our own mind, which causes even more distress.
I am also in the process of standing with a Christian friend who is going through fierce trials that are threatening his whole way of life , It is a fiery trial indeed and to top it off he has just heard he is losing his job too because of his faith (APPARENTLY it doesn’t fit in with his role and the ethos of the company ). It is a a real refining fire he is going through and the one thing he keeps coming back to and holding fast to is that …..God is in control and He knows what He is doing, none can snatch us out of His hand.
It is by faith we must stand on God’s promises when we are in danger of sinking into despondency.
I will be praying for you brother……
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
King James Bible 1 Peter 1:7

The peace of God and His grace be with you always.
    Maranatha!

    • Thanks for your encouragement Christine!

All believers will go through trials and tribulations in this life, none of us will escape without it, for this is what makes us who we are in Christ. We may suffer great pain in this life, but we must always remember who we are, who is with us, and where we are headed, not only that but who has gone before us!

At times I feel all alone in my sufferings, as if abandoned by all, Job felt the same way, that even God Himself was nowhere to be found. I suppose we all feel that way at times, that even God doesn’t hear us, that He doesn’t seem to care about what we are going through in life, that He is nowhere to be found. But I know that there is a reason for all things, that God doesn’t just do things or let things happen without a cause or purpose. Even Jesus Christ felt abandoned by His Father in heaven just before He died on the cross.

I know that our momentary sufferings are just that, momentary in the light of eternity, that they shall pass, and that we suffer for a good reason, that God allows this for a good reason. Our current sufferings as believers in Jesus Christ refine us through fire as if refining precious metals, we are being refined in order to be made more holy as He is holy. We must always remain in the truth no matter what happens to us in this life, the truth of God and His word, and the truth shall set us free!

Thank you for your prayers, I am praying for you as well sister!

      God bless! Maranatha!

      • Amen.
God’s love for us and what awaits us keeps us strong, to endure the setbacks this nemesis has us go through in order to abandon the assurance that God is indeed always with us.

Let us not loose our reward as our nemesis reps things up knowing his time is short and ours will be extended. He knows by having us doubt we’d be unsure and fall in his trap.

Jesus is at the door and we’re going home. Prophecies are being fulfilled and time is short.
In keeping our focus on God, who is using us through our trials, to show others (&ourselves), to endure, have patience; do what is right in His eyes, praying always, giving thanx.
Our reward is greater for having endured to the end and spoiling the nemesis’ plan.

Sending you prayers Gordon of strength, for the spirit of joy to fill you! Inspite of and through your trial. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Remember their lessons to be learned, albeit too many at times, some He helps us with, others He wants us to figure it out ourselves.
        Blessings always, my friend.
