Commentary By: Gordon King
Many of the illnesses in the world today are caused by people not taking care of themselves, generally by not eating right and by not getting enough exercise. Our bodies become what we eat, and if we feed it junk then they will become junk!
As Christians our bodies are holy to God, they are His temples. As such we should maintain them in a way that is pleasing to God, both as a temple and as a vehicle in which we carry out His will. If we cannot carry out God’s will because of the abuse we have done to our bodies then what good are we to His kingdom?
I am in no way a medical expert on health nor a medical doctor, but I have done some research and have discovered many interesting things about the way we eat, about what we put into our bodies and how it affects us mentally, emotionally, and physically! I also work in the healthcare industry, I do have a current medical background and degree, and I see daily the negative effects of abusing your body with a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle.
Many people look as though they are healthy, they aren’t over weight and they seem to be living a normal lifestyle. Yet inside they are a ticking time bomb! They are at the precipice of having a major heart attack, stroke, or of developing cancer, most of which could be avoided with the right diet and exercise.
Obesity is now the number one health issue in the United States, and from obesity comes many other illness with it such as:
- Heart disease and stroke.
- High blood pressure.
- Some cancers.
- Gallbladder disease and gallstones.
- Breathing problems, such as sleep apnea (when a person stops breathing for short episodes during sleep) and asthma.
I have witnessed first hand the damaging effects of obesity on a person’s health, on their shortened length of life, and of the decreased quality of their life! Many become bed bound having a poor quality of life, and most have many medical complications ultimately leading to an early death.
It has been proven that cancer can only live on sugars in our body, that inflammation is a root cause of major illnesses, and inflammation is caused by sugar.
Our society has been fed many lies, one of which is that fat is bad and sugar is good in moderation. The fact is that good fats are essential to our well-being, and sugar is one of the main culprits in obesity and bad health.
The food pyramid adopted by the United States government decades ago is a farce, and I believe that it was instituted not for our actual health and well-being but as an instrument to promote the economy and to line the pockets of big business, all at the expense of our health and well-being.
Think about it, they tell us to consume large quantities of grains and sugars, both of which are major agricultural commodities in the United States. They can be found in most prepackaged and prepared food items in the grocery store. Yet, our society seems to be getting fatter, sicker, and die more often than not from illness which could have been avoided, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and stroke.
Another thing that we have been told is bad for us is cholesterol. However, without cholesterol we would die! Our nervous system is composed of cholesterol including our brain! We need cholesterol to live a healthy life. Cholesterol in the right proportions is a good thing not a bad one.
Another thing that we must be aware of are all of the additives that go into making most of these prepackaged foods. There are ingredients most often listed which I have no idea what they are or what they do to the body and mind. And if I cannot understand what they are let alone pronounce them then I stay away from them! All sorts of chemicals and additives go into the preparation of foods sold to people in the grocery store, things we don’t know anything about, things which have no beneficial effect, yet may just be not only harming us but killing us!
How many of the store-bought prepackaged foods actually have any health benefits to them? How many have the essential nutrients and vitamins that we need to live a happy and healthy lifestyle? Not many I presume.
What we need to be healthy are healthy foods! Most of these foods are not found within the numerous inner isles of the store, but along the perimeter, the whole foods, natural foods, foods which have not been altered or tampered with! These include but not limited to vegetables, fruits, berries, nuts, meats, seafood, milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt, and butter. There are also many very healthy fats which are not only good for us but promote a healthy body and mind, such as coconut, avocado, and olive, even fats from bacon and other meats that are not given antibiotics or hormones are good for us.
I grew up eating bacon and than cooking other foods in the bacon grease, this is what we did, it was normal. Then along came the government telling us that this was bad and unhealthy. Now I find that not only is it healthy but the right thing to do, along with eating eggs. Of course if you are consuming large amounts of carbohydrates then consuming large amounts of any fats most likely isn’t healthy.
The point is that we have been given the wrong information from our government on what we should and shouldn’t eat to be healthy. We must research this on our own and make informed decisions about what we put into our mouths and how often!
We can heal ourselves from illness and also from contracting it in the first place if we eat right and exercise. Most doctors don’t know much about nutrition, instead they want to prescribe us medications to address the symptoms. It’s not all their fault, that is how they were taught, this is what they know. And the pharmaceutical companies are pushing it to the limit!
If the doctors and pharmaceutical companies told us the truth about a healthy diet, proper nutrition through the foods that we eat, than many of the trips to the doctor could be avoided, many of the drugs we take could be eliminated. But of course they don’t want that, this is their livelihood! And many of these prescription medications cause further problems, which in turn cause the doctors to prescribe us even more medications!
I had a physical exam by my doctor about a year and a half ago, he told me that I was pre-diabetic and that my cholesterol levels were way to high. He wanted to put me on Statin drugs to lower my cholesterol. I told him that I would do it naturally, by eating right and dieting, he then grinned at me as if to say: “Yah, right”!
One year later I returned to my doctor, I lost 15 pounds, my blood sugar was in the normal range, and my cholesterol improved greatly! My triglycerides went from 258 down to 121, my LDL went down and my HDL went up. My doctor never even called me back to explain the results of the test! Since then, about 6 months, I have lost another 10 pounds, and I suspect that my triglycerides have gone down even further, my LDL down and my HDL up into the normal range, I’ll find out in another 6 months.
My point is that I changed the way that I eat, my diet. I don’t like to call it a diet because it is just the way that I eat now. When I tell most people what I eat they tell me that I am crazy, that I am going to kill myself, yet the lab results speak for themselves, as well as my weight loss. I no longer feel like taking a nap after lunch, I don’t feel tired and sluggish anymore! And when the flu hit this year people all around me were very sick, yet it didn’t touch me at all, I didn’t have a flu shot (I don’t believe in them). People are still getting sick all around me but I have not had as much as a sniffle, a sneeze, or even any queasiness, and I attribute it to my diet, to what I put into my mouth.
I am on what is called a “Ketogenic” diet, 70% healthy fats (saturated, polyunsaturated, monounsaturated), 25% protein, and 5% carbohydrates. I mostly eat animal fats, cold pressed coconut oil, cold pressed avocado oil, beef and chicken, (fish is good but I don’t like it), bacon, eggs, cheese, almond milk, nuts, small portions of berries, avocados, leafy greens, asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli, zucchini, cabbage, tomatoes, onions, peppers, garlic, spices, and of course plenty of water, but I also limit myself to one cup of coffee per day. I avoid grains of any kind including wheat and rice, cereals, beans, potatoes, sugar and honey, nitrates and nitrites. I try to buy organic vegetables, meats, and eggs, with no added hormones or antibiotics, and grass-fed beef when possible. I also avoid unhealthy fats (refined fats and oils, hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated fats).
There are hundreds if not thousands of ketogenic diet recipes on the internet, tastes for every palate, including a sweet tooth! You can use natural sweeteners which have little to no carbohydrates, you must be the one to make the choices. I make a ketogenic cheesecake which is out of this world, yet it conforms to the diets proportions of healthy fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, it is wonderful! I also make a pizza using mozzarella and cream cheese, almond flour, and one egg for the crust, and it is really good also, no more store-bought, calorie filled, non-nutrient crusts for me! There are even recipes for pancakes, syrup, ice cream, all which conform to the ketogenic diet. It’s not a diet of starvation, on the contrary, it’s a diet of health, nutrition, and eating right!
I am in no way promoting the Ketogenic diet, but it has worked for me! I am most certain that there are many other diet programs which are just as healthy, I happened to choose this one and it works. And with any diet you should check first with your physician if you have any medical issues such as kidney disease. However, most physicians probably don’t know about diets such as these because they have no training in them, let alone in the health benefits of nutrition itself. If you are fortunate enough to have a physician that does then count it as a blessing!
We need the proper nutrition, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that are naturally found in the foods that God has provided with us in order to survive, that’s the bottom line! If we veer off of the path of nutrition then we are doomed to suffer the consequences of living unhealthy and having devastating side effects such as diabetes, cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and even death itself!
We as a modern people have been fed so many lies, lies which tell us to pop a dinner in the microwave and save time for you and your family, to stop by the local fast food restaurant and have a quick meal because you deserve a break today! We have been told to ingest vast quantities of wheat, grains, and sugars because after all they are good for us in moderation. We have been told that cholesterol is a bad thing, and that eating fats is unhealthy. We have been deceived into believing that all we need is a pill to make us feel better and everything will be well.
The truth is that most of the foods found in the grocery store are unhealthy, mostly because they have been altered with unhealthy ingredients. And if we as believers in Jesus Christ are to live a healthy, godly life ready to pursue what God has willed us to do, then we must be prepared both physically, mentally, and emotionally to do it!
It’s not about whether or not it is godly or ungodly to eat certain foods, but are they healthy? It is about eating the right foods that He has given us in order to maintain our temple for God, to fulfill His will for us. By the same token, it’s not about living to eat but eating to live! We must not over eat but eat in order to sustain a healthy life style. Not all that we eat comes out, much of it is converted into fat and stored in our body if we over eat. And the fatter we become the more susceptible we are to other diseases and illnesses, to the overtaxation of bodily organs and eventually to organ failure, leading to death! I see it happen to people more often than I would like to admit, and most of them blame it on someone else other than taking responsibility for their own situation.
I know that there are many people who struggle with weight gain, but there is an answer. If we limit what and how much we put into our mouths then the weight will come off! We will be healthier and have a better quality of life. And I am not under the illusion that there are not underlying issues with many people who over eat, and as such some people will also need counseling. I suggest Christian counseling, a counselor who understands your faith and can guide you accordingly. Weight loss surgery has helped many, but it is nothing more than a placebo, you can still gain weight after this surgery, and you can still be unhealthy if you are not eating the right foods.
Calories in and calories burned, eat less than you burn you will lose weight, and what you put in has an effect on your health and well-being! Exercise also plays an important role in this, first you burn more calories, second it helps to maintain strength, bone density, and circulation, all important in being healthy, not only that but it helps to move the bowels and keep you regular. It increases blood flow throughout your body and especially to your brain, it makes you feel better and increases your emotional well-being.
All of us must make our own decisions in this life, and that includes our health and our diet. As believers in Jesus Christ it is our duty to maintain our temple for God. He has given it to us but we must maintain it, just as we are to maintain our home and anything else that we have been entrusted with, but with our bodies even more so!
God bless my friends! Maranatha!
