Self-Gratification and Self-Aggrandizement, A Sign of the Times!

Commentary By:  Gordon King

On January 22, 2018, I wrote about the increase in earthquake and volcanic activity for the past several days, then on January 23, 2018, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Alaska.  This my friends is one major sign that there will be increased biblical signs of the end times in the year 2018!

And if the increase of these natural phenomena are signs of the times then so are all of the other signs spoken to us in the bible, signs of deception, of the falling away of the church, of the degradation of society, and of people being led astray.

What is it that makes people turn away from God in rebellion?  It is the belief that people can do it without God, that they can do it better than God, and that they themselves know better than God.  This is what we see when we hear about “self”, and our society is becoming more and more “self” inclined then ever before in modern history.  This isn’t a new phenomenon, it started thousands of years ago in the Garden of Eden when Satan tempted Eve, however it is now at an all time high and getting even worse!

Satan tells us that we don’t need God, that we can do it all without God, that we know who we are and what we want more than God does, that we know what is best for us more than God does.  He tells us that we should do what we want, when we want, and how we want, that if we pursue our selfish desires then we will be satisfied!  He tells us to indulge in things which God says are unrighteous and unholy, that we should strive to fulfill all of the pleasures of our heart.

In doing these things we become more and more unrighteous, unholy, and lovers of ourselves, just as the apostle Paul said in 2 Timothy.

2 Timothy 3:1-5

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

All of these things are in direct opposition to God, and all of these things are what we become when we put ourselves before God and before others, when we put “self” in the middle, when “self” becomes the center of our universe.

Satan tells us of pleasurable things upfront, but doesn’t tell us about the bad things that come with them afterwards.  He leads us into temptations by only telling us what we want to hear but not what we don’t!  He deceives us into believing that if we seek to build ourselves up, that if we make ourselves the number one priority in our lives then we will find true happiness and peace, that our lives will be fulfilled, and that we ourselves can even be gods!  However these are all lies and are far from the truth, and if we place ourselves at the center of our universe then we are not only forsaking the people around us but God Himself!

Society is pushing people into self-gratification and self-aggrandizement, to gratify ourselves first, to make more of ourselves than we really are, and this is also what Satan is doing!  The world tells us that we can do anything, that we can fulfill all of our needs and desires if we focus on making ourselves like God without God.  They tell us that we can be all that we want if we become who we are not.  Even Satan himself did this when he rebelled against God, he said that he will be like the Most High.

Isaiah 14:13-14

For you have said in your heart:
‘I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’

We are told that if we buy this or do that then we will be happy and successful, that if we live a certain lifestyle then we will achieve true happiness and peace, it’s all about self, the lifting up of self and the fulfillment of self, all at the expense of denying God and His power, of rebelling against God and putting ourselves in His place!

The true result of placing “self” first is not what they proclaim to be the truth, for these things lead to the falling away from God and to destruction, and for many it will lead to eternal destruction!

There is nothing wrong with trying to improve yourself, to be a better person, or even to fulfill your desires as long as they are righteous desires.  However, it is when we take God out of the equation that they become destructive, when we do not put God at the center of our universe, when we rebel against God, and when we in essence make ourselves out to be a god, as Satan has!

Society at large has taken God out of the equation and have inserted themselves in the center, the world revolves around them and primarily what they can do and get for themselves.  This my friends is not from God but from Satan, it is deception and leads people astray!

As believers in Jesus Christ we are to be more like Christ, we are being sanctified, and we shall perform works which should reflect who we are in Christ, not the other way around.  We should all strive to achieve this, we should be imitators of Christ, not imitators of the world, we should strive to be like Christ not be Christ!

The world takes for itself, rebelling against God, believers in Jesus Christ are to be giving and loving, worshiping, praising, and thanking God in and for all things!

We are witnessing a major sign of the times, the fulfillment of self, self-gratification, self-aggrandizement, self at the center of the universe, the results of which are leading to destruction, to rebellion against God, and ultimately to the return of Jesus Christ to earth!

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!

  1. Hi Gordon, I think the Selfie Stick is a sign of the times! Lovers of self?

  2. Thanks for your comment Christine!

    That is a great example of what I am talking about! “Selfies”, wow, such a representation of the times sister. I could never really understand why people would want to take pictures of themselves? Personally I do not like taking pictures of myself, I don’t even like it when other people want to take my picture! It was not until I put the pieces together and realized that this self-centered attitude and behavior is actually a sign of the end times, a sign of rebellion against the Lord. We can also see a lot of other things that are very self-centered at the beginning of each new year, such as weight loss programs, beauty aides, etc. Not that these are bad things in and of themselves, but when taken out of context (without the Lord as our Savior and center of our life) then they are nothing more than vanity. Losing weight is not a bad thing, we should try to be in good physical condition, we as believers are temples of God, however what is our motive? Is it done for vanity or for health reasons? Is it done out of vanity or for the Lord? Of course we should always try to look our best, nothing wrong with that, unless of course it is vanity.

    Another thing that I would considered self-centered is the worship of anything other than Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. There is but one God, Jesus Christ, and if a person worships anything or anyone else then they are saying that they know better than God does. Some people claim that they are “spiritual”, whatever that really means? Does that mean they believe in spirits? There has been a push over several decades to become spiritual, to become one with nature, even to become a god yourself! Apparently Opray Winfrey believes that there are many ways to heaven, and that Jesus Christ is but one way not the only way. Hindus believe in hundreds of millions of gods, I guess to cover all of the bases? My point is that there is only one true God of the universe, we can easily be misled, but we also can pick and choose which god or gods we want to serve, making our “self” the leader of the universe.

    Sorry for going on and on, but these things just came into my mind as I was writing.

    And many Christians believe that they are in control of their own salvation, this is very self-centered if you ask me! They believe that it was not merely Christ that saved them and kept them saved, but that they must perform good works in order to remain saved. Some even believe that they must do enough good works to get to heaven. How many people say that they are going to heaven because they are a “good” person, that because they go to church regularly, that they read the bible and tithe, so yes they are going to heaven? They have missed the point of Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection from the grave and have put “self” at the center of their salvation! If we say that our salvation is dependent upon what we do in this world, then we do not understand the mercy and grace of God Almighty! If we say that we can lose our salvation by our works, then once again we are putting “self” first ahead of and in place of Jesus Christ!

    God bless sister! Maranatha! Gordon 🙂
