Commentary By: Gordon King
We all live in this world, and as such we all serve someone, whether we like it or not!
You may think that you are free to do as you will, and in a way you are. But, what you may not be aware of is that you are a servant, a servant of the ruler of this world, Satan, or a servant of God, no alternatives.
I believe that there are many Christians out there who think that they have been set free from servitude, that once they were born-again they are free to do as they will, without consequences, without correction. This my friends could not be any further from the truth!
All of us will serve one of two masters, either Jesus Christ or Satan!
If we are not children of God, then we serve Satan, he is the father of this world, the ruler of the lost.
1 John 3:7-8
“Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. “
However, once you are saved then you are not free from servitude, but free from the law of sin and death! You are not free from serving, but free from the penalty of sin, this is what Jesus meant when He said if you believe in Him then you shall be set free. Rather then being free from serving, your service has been transferred from serving Satan to serving Jesus Christ!
“Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.“
As followers of Christ we have been set free from sin, no longer a slave to sin, but slaves to righteousness! No longer children of the devil but children of God!
“And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.“
And what is our righteousness but Jesus Christ!
1 Corinthians 1:30
“But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption“
We have become slaves of Jesus Christ, slaves of God Almighty!
“But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.“
As believers in Jesus Christ we serve a mighty God! Ours is not to do our will but the will of our Father in heaven. We are here to perform God’s will, to serve God as He wills for us to serve Him. Our service to the Lord here on earth pales in comparison to serving God for eternity! However, what we do now in the name of the Lord will have eternal consequences for us when we arrive at eternities gate!
May the good Lord give us the wisdom, insight, clarity, courage, strength, and perseverance needed to perform His will on earth. May He give us the guidance and power to carry it through. In Jesus name, Amen.
God bless my friends! Maranatha!
