Does The Bible Contradict Itself?

Commentary By:  Gordon King

Does the bible contradict itself?  And if it does then is it true?  The bible does not contradict itself, not one time, if it did then it would be proven to be untrue!

If we come across passages that seem to contradict other passages in the bible, then it is not the bible that contradicts itself but rather it is us who do not understand correctly!  We are not rightly dividing the word of God, for God cannot lie nor can He make mistakes, if He did then He would not be perfect, He would not be God!  And if we hear of another gospel being preached than what has been written in the bible then we know that it is not from God!

2 Corinthians 11:3-4

But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!

I have been questioned over and over again about my telling people that our salvation is secure, that once we are a saved, born-again believer in Jesus Christ then we always will be.  I have been told that there are many passages in scripture which tell us that we can lose our salvation, I just don’t see it, and if there are then they are not being rightly understood!

2 Timothy 3:16-17

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

The bible is the truth of God, the truth of His words, inspired and God breathed!  It is inerrant, meaning that there are no mistakes in it, it is infallible!

Ephesians 1:13

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

Scripture makes it very clear that once we are saved, once we are born-again that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit until the day of our redemption.  How difficult is that to understand?  If this one verse of scripture is the truth, and it is, then we cannot lose our salvation, ever!  The “simplicity” of the gospel message often leads people to believe that there must be more to it than that, that it couldn’t be that plain and simple, but it is!

Jesus came to give us eternal life, we shall never perish, neither will anyone snatch us out of His hand!

John 10:27-30

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 I and My Father are one.”

If we say that we can lose our salvation by doing evil works, then I say who is it that is leading us to do these works?  It is not from God but from Satan!  However the scripture above tells us that “no one” is able to snatch us out of His hand, not even Satan!

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. “

Jesus came so that we may have everlasting life (everlasting means forever), whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life!  If you have placed your faith, trust, and life in Jesus Christ then you will never perish!  That means that you cannot be lost again, you cannot go to Hell!  No matter what else happens to you in this life, no matter what you do or don’t do, you will go to heaven as a child of God!

There is never a condition set forth in scripture which tells us that if we fall short then we will lose our salvation, Jesus did not tell us that if we believe in Him we will be saved, we will have eternal life, but if you do not live up to your end of the bargain then you will lose your eternal life.  This never happened!  In fact, just the opposite is true, we are told that it is a gift from God, by His grace, through our faith in Him!  Nothing more, nothing less!  We are not saved by our works lest any man should boast, but only by the saving grace of Jesus Christ on the cross!

I could go on and on and on with scriptures which tell us the same thing, that we have been given eternal life, that we are secure in Christ, that we sit in heaven even now with Christ!

If scriptures seem to contradict themselves then you know that you are not understanding them correctly!  If they seem to be saying two opposing things then you need to pray and meditate upon them.  For the bible does not lie, God cannot lie, nor do His words!

Satan will attempt to confuse us, to make the bible out to contradict itself, this is not from God but from the evil one!  This is one of the deceptions Jesus warned us about, the twisting of the truth.

Sometimes things have just enough truth in them to sound like the truth, but in fact they are lies, straight from the pit of Hell!  For instance, we know that Jesus said He is the only way to the Father in heaven, however, there are those who claim that Jesus is merely one way to heaven, that there are many other ways.  This contains a bit of truth, yet is twisted into a lie!

Just how many in the church today compromise the word of God in order to fit into society?  Way too many I suspect.  There are those who claim that scripture is just outdated, that is hasn’t kept up with the times.  They say that if two people love each other, regardless of their sex, then they should be allowed to marry, that it is a good thing!  They disallow what God has ordained as righteous and holy, they have compromised the truth of God and His words, of His holiness and sovereignty.  Many churches today even go so far as to marry gay couples!  After-all they say, if God is love, then loving another person is of God.  What they are doing is twisting God’s word into meaning something that it doesn’t mean!  We should all love one another, but sexual perversion is not love, it is sin of the flesh!

The truth of the matter is that God loves us and wants us to know the truth.  Satan on the other hand is a deceiver, a murderer, and a thief!  His is to steal, kill, and destroy.  He will try to steal our soul, which he never can if we are saved, he will try to kill us if he has the opportunity, he will try to kill and destroy our relationship with God and with people, he will attempt to destroy what God has ordained as righteous and holy!

Even Satan comes dressed as an angel of light!  He is a deceiver, an imposter, a counterfeit!  We must be able to discern the spirits, to know the truth, and to differentiate from God’s voice and the voice of Satan and his demons!  If we are God’s then we know Him, if we allow ourselves to hear God then we will.

John 10:14-15

I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.

John 10:27

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me

The bible is the truth, every last word.  It does not contradict itself one time, never!  We must rightly divide the word of God, meditate upon it, study it, and listen to God’s voice in giving us understanding!  Amen.

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!
