The Battle is in our Minds!

I am nothing more than a human living in this world, struggling with the world on a daily basis.  Yet I know in my heart and my mind that I have been justified and am being sanctified by God Almighty!  It is by the saving blood of Jesus Christ that I am found worthy, that I have been given a new life, made a new creation, and have become a child of God.  All that I need has been given to me, and whether or not I choose to use it for God’s will depends upon me, however I feel led by the Holy Spirit within me to do what is right.

As believers in Jesus Christ we often become our worst enemy.  When we succumb to the wiles of the devil and the ways of the world then we can find ourselves in a world of a mess!  It is not only Satan and his demonic spirits which cause us to be led down the wrong path, but many times it is of our own doing.  We still have a sin nature within ourselves, and whether or not we follow it depends upon us, however this nature came about from the workings of Satan.

Even if Satan and his minions stopped existing, we would still find ourselves sinning at times, why?  Because of our sin nature.  We not only fight against evil in high places, but within our own mind, and isn’t this where Satan attacks us the most?!

Our thoughts and desires more often then not guide our paths in this world, whether they be right or wrong.  What we believe to be true, what we believe is wrong, the very thoughts which make us who we are, the thoughts which determine the outcome of our lives are all patterned around or thoughts and beliefs.

And so it goes, the apostle Paul told us to put on the whole armor of God, not for a physical fight, but a fight within our minds.  This is where the battle begins, within our minds, thoughts which lead us to do things which are either for or against God’s will.

Ephesians 6:10-20

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— 19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

We are told to put on a belt of truth so that we would know and be able to discern truth from lies, to put on the breastplate of righteousness so that we may do the right things, shod our feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace so that we may spread the truth of God’s word and His salvation, to take the shield of faith to quench the fiery darts of the wicked one by believing in Christ, the promises of God, and trusting in God.  We are also told to take the helmet of salvation, but first we must know that we are saved and just where that helmet is, if we are not sure of our salvation then how can we find the helmet to put it on?!  We must rest assured that when we are saved we are always saved, by grace through faith in Jesus Christ!  We are told to also equip ourselves with the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God, in this way we will know the truth and be able to subdue any and all thoughts which are not of God.

When we do these things then we are more than well equipped to fight off thoughts and desires in our minds which are ungodly and untrue.  We will be able to discern right from wrong, good from evil, and truth from lies.

Jesus Himself used the word of God to fight against Satan.

Matthew 4:1-11

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:

‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’

and,

‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’

Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”

11 Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.”

When Jesus was tempted by Satan why did Jesus use scripture verses to fight him off?  Do you think that Satan was afraid of Jesus using these verses?  I don’t think so, Satan knows the bible probably better than anyone on earth.  I believe that Jesus was using these verse for Himself, to strengthen Himself and to overcome the evil one.

And so it goes, we should take this experience of Jesus and apply it to our own lives.  Putting on the whole armor of God gives us what we need to fight off evil thoughts and desires, it equips us to strengthen our faith, to lead us in the right direction, and to keep us on the right path.  We fight against evil principalities and powers by the things of heaven above.  Knowing scripture and it’s meaning gives us power, it gives us hope, and it gives us the tools that we need to overcome darkness.  Knowing the truth and keeping it written upon our hearts gives us what we need to battle against wrong thoughts in our minds, to overcome fear and doubt, to subdue unbelief.

The whole armor of God not only helps us fight the battle against the enemy within our minds, but it also helps to strengthen our faith, to trust in God, and to encourage us in times of need.  It emboldens us with the power of God to perform God’s will and to remain faithful and true.

Knowing the truth will set you free, it will give you the strength and courage to be steadfast, to follow the road which leads to righteousness.  But it is not merely enough to know the truth, one must believe the truth and follow it.  You must apply it to your life, live it out, and believe in the promises of God!  Even demons believe that Jesus Christ is God, but they are not saved!

Know what God tells us is the truth, discern right from wrong, have faith in God and His promises to us, rest assured of your salvation, be prepared to spread the truth of God and His word, seek righteousness in your life, and know the word of God!  It is not enough to know these things but to apply them to your life!

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!
