Commentary By: Gordon King
There is much discussion and controversy regarding whether or not a Christian can lose his or her salvation. Many believe that once saved always saved, while many others believe that a believer can absolutely lose their salvation. I believe what the scriptures tell me is the truth, that once we are saved we will always be saved, that nothing can separate us from the love of God, and that Christ will lose nothing which has been given to Him by the Father.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.“
True believers in Jesus Christ have been predestined by God to become children of God! We have been chosen before hand to receive His inheritance, being sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession.
This doesn’t sound to me like those who have been chosen, those who have been predestined to become Christ’s personal possession could lose their salvation. We have become possessions of Christ and He will gather us together for Himself! Everything that is His He will never lose, nor can anything take us away from Him.
“All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day.”
Although we will sin, we will fall short of His glory, we are neither justified nor sanctified by our own works but by Him who saved us! He shall lose none of all those who the Father has given to Him, that includes all of those who were saved in the first place, and nothing can separate us from the love of God, nothing!
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
We are not found worthy to be saved by anything that we have done ourselves, nor are we sanctified by what we ourselves do. It is all done by God for God, by His grace, by which he made us acceptable. If we can lose our salvation by our works, then how did we ever get saved in the first place? And if this were true, then most of us would lose our salvation the very same day that we obtained it, and the rest not long after!
Our Father in heaven does not see our sin, rather He sees us as He sees His Son Jesus, pure, holy, and righteous. Our sins have been washed clean by the blood of the Lamb, now and forever more!
Brothers and sisters in Christ, rest assured that your inheritance is eternal, that God saved you to be His personal possession forever more. Let us not believe that the world is stronger than the One who created it, nor that the creation is greater than the Creator either. God is all-powerful, all mighty, and able to do all things, including keeping what belongs to Him, no matter what stands in the way, even ourselves!
God bless my friends! Maranatha!
