Are Believers Immune to Demonic Influence?

Commentary By:  Gordon King

The world is being led into believing lies and deceptions, the doctrines of demons!

1 Timothy 4:1-3

Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

Why is this important for believers to know?

Because in the latter times, the times that we are now living in, demons will seek to lead astray even believers in Jesus Christ!  Yes, even the saved can be led astray, we can turn from the truth and believe lies, we can follow the doctrines of demons!

And it’s not only lies about marriage or which foods to eat or not eat, but lies about our faith, about being saved under the Law and not by grace alone, about what God told us will happen, about the promises of God, and many more things!

Galatians 6:7-8

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.

We reap what we sow, this holds true for everyone, believers and unbelievers alike, the difference is that believers are forgiven of sins and will inherit everlasting life.  However, we must beware that we will also pay the consequences in this life for what we sow in this life, good and bad, we have not been given a free pass to sin!

Whatever we sow we reap, whether good or bad.  Does this mean that if we make mistakes that God will punish us for it?  No, but it does mean that what we sow from our heart that we will reap.  However, if we seek God’s will and make mistakes along the way then I believe that God will turn it for our good.

Demons will tell us that sin will give us pleasure and happiness, that it will lead to good things.  They will mislead us into believing that sin is not bad, and they will guide us away from the truth!

I believe that there are many, many believers in Jesus Christ who think that because they have been saved then they are immune to the wiles of the devil.  That after being born-again they have some sort of shield or antibodies which protect them from the evil ones, when this could not be further from the truth!  Of course, the good Lord may in fact protect us from evil, yet we can still fall victim to demons if we allow ourselves to, or if God does.

If in fact Christians are immune from Satanic attacks, then why is it that scripture tells us to put on the whole armor of God?  Why are we told to withstand the wiles of the devil?  And why are we warned over and over again to beware of Satanic lies and deceptions?  We are told not to be deceived, and if this is the case and it is, then we can in fact be “deceived”!  We can be led astray, down the wrong paths, paths which lead to destruction.

One lie is that we can lose our salvation.  If we believe that we can lose our salvation, then why did God save us in the first place?  If we can lose our salvation then none of us have a chance of eternal life, it would already be lost!  Just how many of us are good enough to retain our salvation?  And if you say that you are then you think much more highly of yourself then you ought!  If we must be good enough to remain saved then it isn’t by the blood of the cross, not by the grace of God alone that we are saved but by our works, a Satanic lie!

Galatians 6:3

For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

We are nothing compared to God, it is not by our works that we are saved, nor is it by our works that we remain saved, if this were not true then what good is God’s grace?!  The whole meaning of the grace of God is giving us what we do not deserve because of His love for us, what makes us deserve it more after we have been saved?  Nothing of ourselves, only of God!

Another deception is that we must “do” something other than repenting of our sins and believing in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior to be saved, another great deception and lie!  Many people believe that you must be baptized in physical water to be saved, yet this is something that we do, something which depends upon our works not His, not what He has done for us.  Let us not take away from the power of the cross, from what Jesus Christ did of us, it’s all about Him not about us and what we do.

Demons will twist the scripture just enough to make it a lie, just enough to make it sound good, but in fact it is untrue.  This is how sin creeps in, little bits and pieces at a time, sounding good, even looking good, but in fact all sin is bad and demonic!  All sin is from Satan himself!

When we sin we are rebelling against God, we are telling God that His way is not good enough, that we know better than He does about what is good for us!  And isn’t this so with our salvation when we say that we must first be baptized in physical water to be saved?!  We are telling God that the sacrifice of His Son was not good enough!  We are then saying that it is God’s grace plus something, when God is telling us that His grace is sufficient!

There are many lies in this world and much deception, including the belief that we all worship the same God no matter what religion or beliefs that you hold.  The lie that Allah and Jehovah are the same God!  The lie that we will all some day make it to heaven no matter what or whom you believe in.

And then there is the lie that if you are a good person and do good things then you will get to heaven, that if you go to church on a regular basis that you will get to heaven, and that if you merely say a sinners prayer that you will get to heaven, all of these are lies!  A person must come before God with a humble heart, a heart of repentance, then he or she must turn their life over to Christ and accept Him as their Lord and Savior, it’s the only way!  Too many people who now profess to be Christians were never actually saved, although they believe that they were.  They recited a prayer of salvation, yet they never did have a change of heart, and that is what truly matters for God knows the heart!

We can be deceived about many things in this world, believe many things which are lies, and follow the doctrines of demons.  Just because we are saved does not mean that we are immune to these things, and in fact I would argue that we are under much more pressure from the evil ones than those who are of the world!

Satan’s plan is to divide the church, to put enmity between believers, to turn one against another.  His is to steal, kill, and destroy, he is a murderer and the father of all lies!  He is in a battle with God our Father in heaven, a battle between good and evil, between what is righteous and holy, and what is evil and unholy.  This battle is going on now in heaven and also on the earth below.  It is intensifying, and demonic spirits are out in force to steal souls, kill life, and destroy what God has ordained as righteous and holy.

Let us not think more of ourselves then we ought to, rather let us put on Christ and walk in His ways, with His power, His Spirit, and His life!  None of us are “good enough”, but God is!

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!

  2. The short answer to the question posed: No.

While we can drive them out, in Jesus’ name, we are by no means immune. Case in point, my wife’s grandmother.

She’s 82 (?) and suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Her disease has progressed to the point where who she was prior no longer exists. The woman my wife knew growing up is 100% gone, never to return.

For most people, this would be sad. However, this woman spent her life spewing so much venom, hatred and bigotry that she actually had throat and tongue cancer. She was an evil, ugly and hateful woman who went out of her way to degrade everyone around her.

What’s more is, none of her children care about her. One of my wife’s uncles occasionally calls to find out if she’s died yet. Other than that, we don’t really suffer much interference from them. They’re waiting just as much as we are. Of course, her Doctor confirms that she’s in excellent health, and is fully expected to outlive the entire lot of us. 😑

Since she’s been gone, what has taken her place seems like a gallery of angry, rebellious, cretinous and confused demons. I’ve honestly lost count of the number of them I’ve rebuked, bound up and cast out. Yet, she exists like a conduit that allows those things into our house to disrupt and derail at every turn.

She has hit our kids, left fecal matter in our kitchen, on the floor and even gone so far as to eat it in front of us.

She fights us every time we go to give her a shower, calls us all “idiots” and even becomes very agitated and argumentative when we read Scripture to her. She just blunders about the house sticking her fingers into other people’s food, stealing food and dishes and generally forcing us into a game of survival.

Needless to say, there is a lot of prayer going on in our home. I’ve even taken to blessing the demons in Jesus’ name. 😉 We’re fighting back by creating a hostile environment for those demons. I mean, we wouldn’t want to be unkind, would we?
