Do not follow the ways of the World!

Commentary By:  Gordon King

Who in their right mind and conscience would seek a fight and a war?  What is it within us that would lead us down the path which only leads to destruction?  It most assuredly is not from God!

James 4:1-6

Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?

But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:

“God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble.”

The ways of the world lead us to destruction, they lead us away from God, in fact they are in rebellion to God!  The pride of life, the pride of ones self, greed and selfishness, these are the things which lead us to want to fight.  When we follow the ways of the world and not of God Almighty then we seek the pleasures of the world and all that it contains, we become proud, arrogant, disloyal, hurtful, covetous, unrighteous and unholy.  We place ourselves above what God has ordained as holy, and we in essence make ourselves better than God (in our own eyes).  These things are from the devil himself!

James 4:7-10

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

We must submit to God and resist the devil.  When we draw near to God than He will draw near to us.  God resists the proud but lifts up and gives grace to the humble.

Bitterness and self-seeking are ungodly, they derive from Satan and are demonic, they are of the world.

James 3:13-18

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

The evil things in this world are abounding at this time in history, they are demonic straight from the pit of hell!  Just as the apostle James has stated for where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.  Isn’t this how we now see the world, full of envy and strife, self-seekers, confusion and chaos everywhere, every evil thing?  These are signs of the end times, signs which tell us that the return of Christ is near, even at the door!

Let us not get caught up in the deception of the world nor follow the teachings of demons, for this is not holy nor righteous but demonic, from the devil himself.  But rather let us be as James told us, peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy, this is wisdom from above!

Resist the devil and he will flee!  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you!

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!
