Commentary By: Gordon King
The physical church building is not the temple of God as it was in the old testament, rather the synagogue was, however this was under the old covenant not the new covenant. Believers in the old testament did not have the Holy Spirit of God within them as we do now. They did not commune with God as we do now, nor did they have access to God as we do now!
Jesus Christ came into this world to put and end to the old covenant by replacing it with a new covenant. No longer do we sacrifice animals as a symbol to cover our sins, Jesus came as a sacrifice for all of our sins once and for all!
‘ “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” 17 then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” 18 Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.‘
Jesus did away with temple worship, with the high priest meeting with Him in the “Holy of Holies”. The new covenant gives us access to God our Father through Jesus Christ. We can commune with God whenever and wherever we want. We no longer offer sacrifices for our sins, because Jesus already paid the price!
“Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.“
Jesus is the temple of God, and we like Jesus are also temples of God!
1 Corinthians 6:19
“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?“
The church is merely a building, a gathering place for people to meet and worship God, however, God does not dwell in the church building, He dwells within each and every believer!
“God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.“
Let us not be caught up with the belief that God Almighty dwells in buildings, that we must go to a church building in order to worship and praise our Lord! That is a lie straight from the pit of hell! God dwells within each person who has been saved. We are His temple, we belong to Him. We can and should worship God daily, we should give Him praise and thanks, doing all for Him through every good work.
Do we merely attend a physical church once a week in order to worship and praise God?! Is that what Christianity is all about? I think not my friends, I think not! We are to surrender our life and all that we possess to the Lord, each and everyday, picking up our cross and following Him daily, not one day a week!
When we are saved we are born-again, given a new spirit, made new creations in Christ Jesus!
Being born again does not mean physically being born again, but being born of the spirit, a new spirit! Jesus Christ is of the Spirit as is our Father in heaven, and the Holy Spirit within us. Jesus said that a person must be born of water and the Spirit.
‘Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” ‘
I believe that there are two meanings to being born of water, first of all we are physically all born in a sack of water or amniotic fluid, I believe that this is merely a physical representation of what takes place in the spirit. Jesus told the Samaritan woman that He is living water, therefore being born again by living water is what He meant by this spiritually. Again, when we are saved then we are born of the Spirit of God!
Everything in this world is physical in nature and it is finite, meaning that it has an end. However, things of the Spirit are eternal meaning that they will last forever! When we are born into this world it is physical, and being of the flesh we will die by the flesh, unless we are born again Spiritually! When we are born of the Spirit then we have eternal life, it can never be taken away, it is eternal!
Christians are spiritual beings, not of this world, but of heaven up above. Our physical bodies are here on earth as temples of God because the Holy Spirit dwells within us. Once we are in heaven we will have no use for our physical bodies, because we will be with God in heaven, we will worship Him face to face!
We are not only temples of God, but we have been made priests and kings! There is no need for man-made degrees saying that we must have this document in order to preach God’s word, no! Do you not know that God has given us all the authority to preach, to teach, and to exhort one another, this is God’s will.
Christians are the church of God, and when we unite together then we are in church! Whether it be in a home, on the street, in the forest, or together here on the internet on a blog such as this, we are in church. This is where God’s power lies, not in a building, but together with His people, wherever and whenever we unite together!
God’s children have power in prayer, and when we pray together then we have the power of God with us! Let us not forsake the gathering together of ourselves, whether or not it be in a church building, a town hall, a persons home, or even on the internet.
“And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.“
I have heard pastors use this passage to prove that we must meet together in a physical building they call a church! And that if we don’t then we are disobeying God. The passage actually says “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together”, which means to meet together period! It says nothing about a church building! We are to commune with one another in order to stir up love and good works, to exhort one another, but it can be anywhere at any time!
We are the body of Christ and Christ is Spirit, therefore we are spirit also! As spiritual beings we must see the spiritual, seek what is spiritual, and follow the Holy Spirit of God Almighty!
God is Spirit, and we must worship Him in spirit and truth! It’s not about physical worship but about spiritual worship. Let us all put aside the physical and worship God in spirit. It’s what is in our hearts that counts the most, not what we have or do physically. Of course we should do good works for the Lord, but it’s how and why we do it that really makes the difference and stores up for us treasures in heaven!
God bless my friends! Maranatha!
