The Value and Benefits of Salt

Salt and Light

Commentary By:  Gordon King

Salt is a mineral used to flavor and preserve food, but it is also used to disinfect.  As children of God we are the salt and the light of the world, used not only bring about good but also to expose evil and bring about life through Christ!

When you put salt onto an open wound it burns!  It not only burns but it kills germs which may be lurking in and around the wound.  As such, when Christians spread the word of God they are spreading the truth upon those who may not want to hear it, they are putting salt into open wounds and it hurts!  This is why so many people don’t want to hear about it, because the truth often hurts.  They would rather fester in their own misery, live in their sin, and die infected with deadly bacteria!

Most people living in the world don’t really know why they don’t want to hear the truth about God, they only know that it hurts and they don’t like it!  Just as most children, or adults for that matter, don’t like antiseptic poured onto a cut, it hurts.  They don’t see the benefits of it, they only feel the pain.

The world we live in has been infected with sin, a deadly bacteria which will kill if not eradicated!  Satan is quickly spreading this bacteria seeking to kill as many as he possibly can.  He has blinded the eyes of the lost to the truth of the gospel of Christ, to the salt which can save their lives!

Salt, it preserves the good, kills the bad, and gives life!  It seasons our food and gives life meaning.  It pulls a meal all together and holds together the body of Christ!

The world is missing a very important ingredient, salt!  Without it life is meaningless, with it life has value and there is hope!  Christ is the salt of the world, we are the salt of the world, Christ in us and we are in Christ!  Without this ingredient there is no hope, no taste, no value.

Do not live your life without salt, live your life with Christ!  Do not forsake the value and meaning of salt, nor the benefits of salt, eternal life.

We are told to be the salt of the world, to season it with our good works for the Lord, to spread His message of hope and salvation.  If our salt looses its flavor then what good is it?  It neither enhances the taste nor hurts when poured onto open wounds.

Matthew 5:13

You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

Go out into the world, spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, be the light and the salt which produces eternal life.  Love those who hate you, give to those in need, and comfort those who are hurting.  Shake some salt onto those open wounds and save a life from deadly bacteria.  It may not always feel good but the benefits are out of this world!

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!
