The Truth Shall Make You Free!

Truth versus Lie copy

Commentary By:  Gordon King

John 8:32

And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Knowing the truth makes us free, free from bondage, free from sin.  Once we are born-again then we have been set free from the sin of the world, we are no longer bound by the law, but free from under it.  We are saved by grace, not by following the law!

Romans 8:1-2

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

It is so vitally important for followers of Christ to know the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.  We must rightly divide the word of God, otherwise we are not only deceiving others but also ourselves!  Let us not stand ashamed in the eyes of God, but find ourselves approved before God!

2 Timothy 2:15

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

For if we stray from the truth of God’s word, then we are misleading not only ourselves but also other believers and overthrowing their faith.

2 Timothy 2:17-19

17 And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some. 19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

We are all growing in our faith, becoming more Christ-like, there are things that we don’t fully understand, and there are times when we all make mistakes.  Not all of us see the same things, and there are times when the truth of God’s word is revealed to us, perhaps even at a deeper level.  However, knowingly misleading others in the word of God is much different.  It is not only unrighteous and unholy, but a sin!

Revelation 22:18-19

For I testify to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this book; 19 and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.

God takes it very seriously when anyone adds to or takes away from His book, written in Revelation.  I believe that not only does He mean the book of Revelation, but the entirety of His word.

There are many false teachers in the world today, many who have taken God’s word and twisted it into their own beliefs.  This is a sin!  Not only is it a sin but it leads many away from the truth.

This is a time of great confusion in the world, a time where many will be deceived, and it’s only getting worse!  Not only in the world itself, but also in the church!  Satan and his demons have infiltrated the church of God, theirs is to steal, kill, and destroy.

Let us not fall victim to the workings of Satan, but follow the lead of the Holy Spirit within.  Know what God says, let the Holy Spirit discern right from wrong, allow scripture to interpret itself!

It’s so very easy to read things into the word of God, to make it what we want it to be, not what it actually is.  Just because we don’t like something in scripture does not mean that we should change it, on the contrary, we must look at scripture from a heavenly perspective, from God’s view not our own.  We must understand what it actually says!

Many times we cannot comprehend just what God is telling us, but we must remember that God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, and our ways are not God’s ways.

Isaiah 55:8-9

‘ “For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.’

We must teach each others with a heart of God!  Not out of anger and with wrath, but being gentle and kind, being patient, with humility.  We must pray for the good Lord to give us wisdom and understanding.

2 Timothy 2:23-26

But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. 24 And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, 26 and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

At times there will be disagreement between believers, and if it is so then let it be.  Not everyone will agree on all things, we must seek God’s wisdom and understanding.  Yet, there are those unbelievers who hear the truth and will not accept it, we must dust off our feet and move on.  It is God’s job to soften the heart, to open the eyes and ears of unbelievers, not ours!  We can and should pray for them and show them God’s love for them.

We must all continue to seek the truth, to understand God’s word, and to live it out daily.  We must allow God to live in us and through us, not of our own doing, but His!

John 7:17

If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority. 18 He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who seeks the glory of the One who sent Him is true, and no unrighteousness is in Him.

There are times when we have heard the interpretation of God’s word and thought it to be the truth, yet after thoughtful consideration and insight from the Lord, we find that our interpretation of His word changes, or we see it in a new light.  I believe that this happens to most of us at one time or another.  This is learning and growing in the Lord.

These times are dark and getting darker, there will be more and more dissection of God’s word, more misinterpretations, and more leading people astray.

As believers we should be growing in the word of God, we should be increasing in our faith of God.  There are things in God’s word which we may not be too sure about, yet there are many things which we know are true.  We must hold fast to these things, write them on our heart, and carry them with us at all times!

I can feel the darkness around us, it is unrelenting and powerful.  Yet, I know that He who is in me is greater than he who is in the world!  I know that Jesus Christ has already won the battle, and that we are victorious though Christ!  I know that Jesus Christ died on the cross to cover all of my sins, and that He rose and ascended into heaven.  I know that one day I will be resurrected, given a new body, and will live forever with Christ in peace!  I know that God will never leave nor forsake me, that He is always with me.  I know that God makes all things work together for the good of those that love Him, all who are called according to His purpose.  I know that all of the promises of God are true, and that God cannot deny Himself!  I know that I am a child of God, and that once His no one nor anything can pluck me from the hand of God, nothing!

John 10:27-30

‘ “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 I and My Father are one.”

Romans 8:37-39

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Place your faith and trust in Jesus Christ!  Seek God and the things of heaven above.  Know what God’s word says and keep it written upon your heart.  Discern right from wrong, truth from lies, and let the Holy Spirit be your guide!

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!

  1. Absolutely true. The truth can make you free. There is much truth in the bible, and many times you have to do extensive study and research to get to it.

  2. Well said, Gordon. Thank you.
“There are many deceivers about in the world, refusing to admit that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. They are the Deceiver; they are the Antichrist. Watch yourselves, or all our (your) work will be lost and not get the reward it deserves. If anybody does not keep within the teaching of Christ (teaching either by, or about Christ) but goes beyond it (teaching pure speculation as apostolic doctrine,) he cannot have God with him: only those who keep to what he taught can have the Father and the Son with them. If anyone comes to you bringing a different doctrine, you must not receive him in your house or even give him a greeting. To greet him would make you a partner in his wicked work”. (your mind would be open to his doctrine and thereby/probably be deceived.) (2John 1:7-11)
We are to pray for them and let God take care of the rest. We are to pray for clarity ourselves to discern HIS word.
May our Lord Jesus Christ give us the wisdom to discern His word, to understand His teachings and emulate His character and mannerism, in a world that’s growing cold and distance from His truth. In Jesus’ holy name, I pray, Amen. God bless us all! Peace be with you. Maranatha!
