Commentary By: Gordon King
There are those in the world who believe that all is well in the world, and that everything is headed on a trajectory of becoming better. They believe that the world is evolving into something better, that human wisdom and reasoning can make the world a better place.
Then there are those who are apathetic towards what is happening in the world around them. They would rather ignore what is happening in order to believe that all is well. The sad part about this group is that there are even many believers who feel this way! If it isn’t effecting them then does it really matter? Not a good or righteous view for a follower of Christ to have.
And then we have those who believe that the world is headed towards disaster. These are composed of both secularists and followers of Christ, however, there is a difference between how these groups view and respond to what is coming upon the world.
The secularists have no hope for the future, they stock pile goods, and make plans for survival in the event of upcoming disasters and tragedies. Yet, their future is bleak and dim, without the hope of a better existence. They see the world falling apart, yet they have no explanation for it. Many seek the refuge of false gods, of idol worship, and place their lives in the hands of demonic spirits, most without even knowing it. They have no assurance of eternal life, nor do they actually know if they will ever get to heaven, if they even believe in it!
Followers of Christ on the other hand have a hope for the future. And while many believers also prepare for upcoming disasters and tragedies, our future is anything but bleak and dim! We know what is coming, we are aware of what is happening in and around the world, and why. When we see the darkness becoming darker, then we know that the return of Jesus Christ is near, even at the door! When we see bible prophecy coming to pass this gives us hope and assurance that what is spoken of in scripture is true, that the promises of God are valid. Bible prophecy is not for the unbeliever, but for the believer!
1 Corinthians 14:22
“Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.“
I for one am a proponent of preparing for disaster. I believe that the bible gives us enough teaching to prepare for upcoming disasters and tragedies. We should all be putting aside food, water, medicine, first aid, and the like. We know that the world is becoming a darker place, that disasters will strike, and that the persecution of followers of Christ will get worse. Then why shouldn’t we be preparing ahead of time for it? We should! Just a Noah prepared for the Great Flood, we should prepare, and just as Joseph prepared for a seven-year famine, we should be preparing also!
It wouldn’t take much for chaos to strike, for stores to close or run dry of food, water, and medicine, I’ve seen it happen before first hand during hurricane season! And when civil chaos strikes, then there will be rioting, looting, and burning, I’ve seen it happen first hand during the Watts riots! If we suffer a major power outage, which could happen at any time, then banks, stores, and gas stations will be closed. There will be no way to purchase items without cash on hand, that is if you can find anything to purchase!
And if we are hit with an EMP (electrical magnetic pulse), then there will be no electricity! Would you be prepared to survive without being able to purchase any more food, water, medicine, or first aid supplies? Do you have enough supplies in your cabinets now to survive for several months if need be? Most people don’t I’m afraid.
Stock away non-perishable foods, water, water filtration devices, medicines, first aid supplies, alternative cooking means, matches or fire starters, flash lights, radios, batteries, toiletries, and cash. These are just the essentials, there are many more items which may be necessary, many which may be needed in times of disaster such as tools, knives, rope, tarps, duck tape, potassium iodide tablets, water buckets, plastic bags, blankets, jackets, and yes, even weapons to defend you and your family.
It is also a good idea to have plenty of items in order to barter with, such as tooth paste, tooth brushes, soap, matches, oatmeal, rice, and beans. These items are relatively inexpensive and can be stored away without too much trouble. I believe that these items will also be some of the most commonly needed items when disaster does strike and people find themselves without any preparations whatsoever. Something else which will be one of the most needed and I believe most sought after commodity will be fresh water! If you have any way of storing up fresh water or the ability to get it, then you should.
If it is at all within our means, then we should be storing up much more than we or our family needs. This way we can help those in need. Believe me, there will be plenty of them out there! And what better way to share the gospel of Jesus Christ?!
Another thing to do is to have a disaster plan. How to exit the home or property, how and where to meet loved ones, alternative methods of communication and transportation. Location of fresh water supplies. Methods for obtaining or foraging for food.
I don’t think that we can be over prepared for disaster. There will always be something else that we should have stored away, something that we should have done.
Some people will say that I am overly concerned, that I am going a little too far! They may call me a “worry wort” or “chicken little”. However, I know things are getting worse, I believe what the bible says about the end times, and I know how bad things can get really fast! I’m not planning on building a bomb shelter, nor am I hiding away in the mountains, but I am preparing for disaster and so should you. This is the smart and wise thing to do, not only for yourself, but also for your family, friends, and loved ones.
We are nearing the twelve o’clock hour, do not be afraid, nor let your heart be troubled, for the return of Christ is near, even at the door. Rejoice!
And if you do not yet know the Lord Jesus, then do it now while you still have the chance!
God bless my friends! Maranatha!
