Commentary By: Gordon King
“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.“
Jesus came to save the world, yet He also came wielding a sword! Not a physical sword mind you, but a metaphorical sword. He knew that the gospel would stir up division among families and those living in the world. And say it isn’t so!
Jesus Christ came into this world fully man and fully God. He sacrificed Himself so that we may be saved and have eternal life with Him. He is the only way to heaven! When a person believes and says these things people become divided and many will hate because of it.
There is much division and even hatred among many people when they hear the gospel of Jesus Christ. A few short decades ago who would have thought that the word Christian would stir up so much strife and hatred? But here we are in the 21st century and Christianity has become a four letter word!
What was right has become wrong and what was wrong has become right.
Mention the name Jesus and see how people respond! Tell them that you are a Christian and see how they react. Try to tell them about the gospel and you will either get dirty looks, total disagreement, or even irate behavior! And depending upon where you live, you may even find yourself locked up in prison or executed!
There is both good and evil in the world. The evil will attempt to overtake the good, and when the good rises the evil will fight to take it down! When those who believe in Jesus Christ spread the good news, those who reject God will be divided and angered by it. This is how it is now, and this is exactly what Jesus meant when He said that He did not come to bring peace but a sword.
It is true that Jesus is the Prince of Peace, and He did come to bring peace to the world, peace between man and God! This is what it’s all about, reconciliation with God. This is what the gospel is all about!
Jesus tells us that we must love Him more than we love our families, and we must love Him more than we love our worldly lives. In order to truly love Jesus we must take up our cross and follow Him!
The times are upon us for increased persecution of Christians and is only getting worse. If you love God more than you love your own life, then it is time to stand tall, firm, and boldly in your faith.
Seek not the things of this world, but rather seek first the kingdom of heaven! Do not be self-centered in your actions, but seek to help those in need. Love those in the world who are lost and pray for them. Be righteous and holy in your deeds, and may your good works follow you into heaven!
God bless my friends! Maranatha!
