Commentary By: Gordon King
Heaven, a place of eternal peace and comfort, a place filled with the glory of God! Never-ending love, unconditional acceptance and perfection!
Is heaven a place that we have to wait for? Is it somewhere off in the distant universe where one day we will be forever with the Lord? Well, yes and no. Heaven is a real place, it is where our Father sits upon the throne with His Son Jesus at His right side. This is real, even more real than you or I are living here in this world today!
And while most of us yearn to be in heaven with Jesus, I tell you that we are there now! Not in our physical bodies, but in our spirits. Yes, heaven is real, and we can experience some of heaven now.
“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.”
Just as the kingdom of God is ours as an inheritance from God, we have already been given our inheritance, or at least some of it.
“In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.”
“Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.”
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
Just what is our inheritance?
“The righteous shall inherit the land and dwell upon it forever.”
For one thing we will inherit the earth! As followers of Jesus Christ, we have been given the inheritance of the earth. Not yet, not now, but after Christ returns, and I believe that it will be the new earth!
“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Our inheritance is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, meaning that it will last forever!
1 Peter 1:3-5
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
The unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God, meaning that the righteous will!
1 Corinthians 6:914
“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.“
Our inheritance is the kingdom of God! Whatever is in God’s kingdom is our inheritance. Meaning that virtually everything that God has is ours as an inheritance. You really have to stop and think about that for a while to really grasp the grandiosity of it all! I try to understand just what it does really mean and what it really contains but my human mind cannot fully comprehend it. For one reason we don’t know everything that God has prepared for us.
1 Corinthians 2:9
‘But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” ‘
We have before us an inheritance which is so much more, so much better than we could even imagine! While our lives now may be filled with trials and tribulations, with pain and suffering, it is nothing compared to what awaits us with the Lord!
God’s kingdom, we are a part of it, here and now. Some of our inheritance we have already been given, such as God Himself and the Holy Spirit of God. We have access to the heavenly throne and to our Father in heaven. We have the power of prayer, and the ability to perform great things through the power of Christ. We have the love of God within us, able to do good works and shine a light all for the glory of God! The kingdom of God here now is righteousness, holiness, peace and love. These are all part of our inheritance, of who we are as children of God. But, lets not forget about the most important thing of all, our salvation!
Some may argue that we have not yet entered God’s kingdom, and I disagree. While we are not yet physically in heaven, we have been given access to it. God and His children are all part of His kingdom, so where He is and we are, there also is the kingdom of God! It’s not like it will be once we are fully redeemed, but merely one aspect of the kingdom. God has a kingdom, He is the King, He always has and He always will. We are still living in our physical bodies, in a fallen world, and we are still affected by it. But just because we are living in a sinful world ruled by a Satanic god, does not mean that we are not in God’s kingdom.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t feel like I belong here anymore. The closer I get to God, the more I just want to get out of here. I feel so out-of-place, like a stranger in a far away land. I feel so alienated from the world, yet I have to live in the world and be a part of the world. At times I wonder just how much longer I must wait? Even though I feel this way I know that God is with me, that He loves me dearly, and that He wants the best for me. I know that soon, one day, I will be fully redeemed when Jesus comes in the clouds for His bride!
‘Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” ‘
It’s not easy living in a world ruled by Satan, nor is it easy being a believer surrounded by darkness. But, we as believers must remember that we are not of this world, ours is of another place, a heavenly place. Our God is in control of all things, yet He allows Satan to rule the world. And even though the world is dark, I must remember that the kingdom of God is within me and around me, that the light and love of God is still in the world, and His kingdom is the universe and beyond!
“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”
“Nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.”
God’s kingdom is here now, yet not in its full glory. One day soon we shall be redeemed, with a shout, with a voice of an archangel, with the trumpet of God, the Lord will descend from heaven and catch up those who are alive to be with Him forever! Amen.
We have so much to look forward to, so many wonderful and beautiful things in our future! Take heart my friends, know that this life will only last a little while, then we shall spend eternity with the Lord! In the mean time, make the best of your time by shining the light, spreading the truth, helping those in need, and loving even your enemies.
God bless my friends! Maranatha!
