Cyclone Winston Tears Through Fiji

(SOURCE)  Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston made landfall Saturday, nailing the island of Fiji in the southern Pacific. The intense storm resulted in at least 21 deaths and hundreds of demolished homes.

“The damage has been widespread, homes have been destroyed, many low-lying areas have flooded, and many people have been left stunned and confused about what to do,” said Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama. “This is a time of sorrow, but it will also be a time of action. We will stand united in the face of this disaster.”

Along with downed power lines and trees, roofs were severely damaged, and in some cases, entire houses were blown to pieces.

The country has called for a monthlong state of emergency while citizens recover from the immense damage left by the massive storm.
