Vibrant ‘Hand of God’ Cloud Formation Appears in Portugal’s Skies

A cloud that took the form of a ‘hand of God’ holding a fireball dominated the skyline above the north coast the Portuguese island of Madeira at around 8 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 24. (Mercury Press)

(SOURCE)   When locals living on the Portuguese island of Madeira woke up on Monday, they didn’t expect to see something quite so supernatural in the morning sky.

Weather blogger Rogerio Pacheco captured the photo above around 8 a.m. and since then, it’s gone viral.

“For me, the cloud looks like an outstretched hand with a fireball,” Pacheco said. Others have compared it to a flaming comet.

“The cloud formation takes on a breathtaking appearance due to a phenomenon called light scattering,” meteorologist Quincy Vagell explained. “At sunrise and sunset, light from the sun has to pass through a greater distance across earth’s atmosphere, where the light is scattered. The result is that vibrant colors, such as reds and oranges, are more dominant.”

According to Vagell, the cloud’s shape was created by turbulent swirls of wind in the low to mid levels of the atmosphere.

“Though usually random, occasionally for a brief moment, clouds can take on an appearance of something more profound in this environment,” Vagell said.

  1. That is extremely cool to see that, real signs that the lord exists. But I wonder why this appeared in Portuguese. why not any where else? must be a very important message to Portuguese.

  2. The Madeira Islands are Portuguese but they are way out in the Atlantic down off the coast of Africa. Still they are owned by Portugal. The Portuguese might think it meaningful as their history includes the Virgin Mary sightings at Fatima before World War One. There were prophecies from that revealed to the Vatican which have not been fully revealed. However, the theory on the prophecies is that they spoke to the coming world wars through the future corrosive events and end times for the Catholic Church. I have been to the big basilica and grotto at Fatima as I visited my mother’s Ribeiro family ancestral Portuguese homeland with her.
