Commentary By: Gordon King
It’s difficult for us to really understand just how awesome our God is. Most of us don’t really know or understand what it will be like to be in the presence of the Lord. I mean, to actually stand in front of Him, to feel an overwhelming sense of love, peace, and comfort!
What does the love of God feel like? Have you ever felt the intensity of God’s love? I have to some extent. Not long after God anointed me with His Holy Spirit just over three years ago, He also anointed me with His love! And if that was only a small taste of God’s love, then I can’t wait for heaven!
The feeling that I had is indescribable, unlike anything found on this world. How can you try and explain to someone what the love of God feels like if you have nothing to compare it to? Actually, I did my best to briefly describe it in a post that I wrote a few years ago. I will post it here.
Most of us have experienced love of the earthly form. The love of a parent, a sibling, a child, or a mate. The closest form of love that I could compare on this earth to God’s love for us would be a parent’s love for their child. This is unconditional love, love that lasts for a lifetime, or at least it should.
Yet, even this kind of love is really nothing compared to the love of our Creator! His love is intense love, a love which surpasses our understanding of what love is when compared to the love of God.
And peace, just what is peace anyway? We define peace as harmony, nonviolence, quiet, calm, and tranquility. The peace that we know on earth will be much different from the peace we will have with the Lord. And as with love, this peace also surpasses our understanding of what it really means in heaven. I believe that this peace will encompass all of God’s creation, all living in harmony, all having the same purpose, to live and exist for our Savior, out of love and compassion for Him.
We don’t really know much about heaven, or what God has created for us when we get there. We know that it will be wonderful, but that in and of itself is a gross understatement!
I have heard the testimony of many people claiming to have gone to heaven. Whether they have or not is not in question here. What they tell us is that it was so magnificent and glorious that they did not want to return. They all wanted to stay put in heaven with their Lord and Savior!
From what I have experienced myself, God’s love and presence is electrifying, it is alive and moving. Being filled with the love of God is almost overwhelming while being alive on earth. It is like nothing I have felt before, and I believe that I only experienced just a small portion of what it will be like in the presence of Jesus Christ and God our Father! Can you imagine being in the presence of the entire Trinity of God?!
Trying to explain what heaven will be like could be compared to trying to explain to a small child what Disneyland will be like when they get there. They cannot even imagine it until they actually get there and experience it for themselves! However, heaven will be much, much better than Disneyland, that doesn’t even come close to a comparison.
So if you are thinking, ok, someday I’ll go to heaven, it’s not that big of a deal. You better think again! First of all, you only get two choices, heaven or hell. Eternity with God or eternity without God, no in-between destinations, sorry! If you think that you will get to heaven by doing good works, think again! No one will get to heaven by their good works, only by accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, that’s it!
And if you are a believer, than although we do not get to heaven by our works, we will be rewarded for our good works in heaven! This means that our eternal life will more than likely be effected by the good works that we have done while here on earth! Like the bible says, store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.“
Doing good works is like having a 401k plan for heaven. Good works must be done from the heart, for the right reasons. Do not do your works so that man can see them, this is wrong and will not be rewarded.
“Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.“
This does not mean that you should avoid doing good works in front of people, just don’t do it for that reason. Do it for the glory of God! This is how I see it. Are you doing it so that you can boast about it, or are you doing it for the glory of the Lord?
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.“
You either do good works out of humility and the glory God, or you do it out of pride and arrogance.
Heaven is for real! Just what will it be like, I don’t know for sure, but it will be much more magnificent than anything I could ever imagine!
God bless my friends! Maranatha!
