Cherry Picking Christianity!

cherry picking

Commentary By:  Gordon King

What does it mean to be a Christian?  Where do our standards come from and just what should we believe to be the truth?  Should we believe what scripture tells us or should we only believe what we want?  If we twist the words of God to meet our own values, will we still go to heaven?

These are just some of the questions coming to my mind as of lately.  Why?  Because I see those in the world and even many so-called believers questioning the word of God.  I see them “cherry picking” from the bible to meet their own worldly set of standards.

I will explain what being a Christian is to me.  What I have taken from scripture and the Holy Spirit within me.

Being a Christian first of all means believing that Jesus Christ is God, that He died for our sins so that no one would perish.  It means repenting of our sins, which means to have a change of heart towards the sins we have committed and asking God to forgive us.  Salvation is a free gift from God, out of grace and mercy, not of our own works!  There is nothing that we can do to earn our salvation, nor anything that we can do to lose it once we have been saved and sealed by the Holy Spirit.

Secondly, it means to be more “Christ-like” in our attitudes, our beliefs, and in our actions.  It means that we should believe what Jesus and the holy scripture tells us is the truth!  It means that we should act as Jesus did and would have, to humble ourselves, to act out of humility and meekness.  To put God first in all things, and to love and hold dear the children of God.

We are to continually decrease ourselves and increase God!  It means giving up our own lives and putting on Jesus Christ, allowing the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us, to build a relationship with the God of the universe.  This is true Christianity!

There are those who profess to be Christians who do not believe all of scripture.  Many do not support or pray for Israel and the Jews!  This to me is like a child not supporting or defending their parents or siblings!  What in the world are they thinking, just what did they have for breakfast?!

First of all, God tells us in Genesis 12:3 that He will bless those who bless Israel and will curse those who curse Israel.  It goes on to say that “all” of the families of the earth will be blessed in them.

Genesis 12:3

I will bless those who bless you,  And I will curse him who curses you;  And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

Do we as Christians just ignore this statement?  Did God only mean this at that time?  Has God now changed His mind?

As believers in Jesus Christ we should believe the entire word of God!  Therefore, we should not ignore what God tells us.  When God says something He means it, He means it when He said it and He means it now!

Another thing that many Christians seem to forget, is that Jesus was born from the Jews!  Therefore, Jesus Himself was a Jew!  Born from Abraham, Issac, and Jacob, from the seed of David.

God made a covenant with the Jewish people thousands of years ago, beginning with Abram, who God later named “Abraham”.  He made Abraham and his descendants His chosen people and made many promises to them.  Has God now gone back on His word?  Has God broken the covenant that He made with Abraham?  No!  Of course not!  God keeps His word and His promises, if not, then are we still saved?  Will God not honor the promises that He made to us as believers?  Of course He will, He never goes back on His word and always honors His promises!

For a believer to not support Israel is ignorant and foolish!  The scripture speak of the Jews and the nation of Israel throughout, right on through the book of Revelation.  In fact, the Tribulation period is also referred to as “The Time of Jacob’s Trouble”, a time for the Jews, not Christians!

Jeremiah 30:3-7

For behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘that I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,’ says the Lord. ‘And I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.  Now these are the words that the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah.

“For thus says the Lord:

‘We have heard a voice of trembling,
Of fear, and not of peace.
Ask now, and see,
Whether a man is ever in labor with child?
So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins
Like a woman in labor,
And all faces turned pale?
Alas! For that day is great,
So that none is like it;
And it is the time of Jacob’s trouble,
But he shall be saved out of it.

Israel, the “apple of God’s eye”.

Zechariah 2:8

For thus says the Lord of hosts: “He sent Me after glory, to the nations which plunder you; for he who touches you touches the apple of His eye.” ‘

Did some of us also forget that Jesus actually came into being as the “King of the Jews”?  As a Savior first to the Jews, then to the Gentiles!  Did we forget that the twelve apostles were also all Jews?!

So, for some so-called Christians to say that they do not support the Jews or Israel is preposterous!  It is against God Himself and against what God teaches us.

This is not the only circumstance in which many so-called believers in Jesus Christ pick and choose what to believe and what to twist at their own will.

Sexual promiscuity, perversions, and even gay marriage have all been taken out of context and been turned into good from sin.  Many say that as long as they are done out of “love”, then all is well.  I say Baloney!  What bible are they reading from?!  Of course God tells us that these things are sin and that we should turn away from them.

1 Corinthians 6:18

“Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.”

Galatians 5:19-21

“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Matthew 5:28

“But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Romans 1:24-27

Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

And even so, there are many in the world today, and even many believers who side with them, who say that they are only loving other people and what’s wrong with that!  This is their defense, their defense against the word of God.  The twisting of the truth, turning what was made for good into evil and sin.

There are many other things which people of the world and many believers twist and turn in order to suit their own lustful needs and desires.  For example: abortion, drug and alcohol abuse, and even believing that Jesus Christ is not the only way to heaven!

The times that we are now living in are perilous!  Demonic forces are using everything in their power to deceive the masses and even believers in Jesus Christ!  Chaos and confusion often make it difficult to discern what is right and what is wrong in the world today.  God told us this would happen, He said that many will be deceived in the last days!

God is warning us, He is telling us to wake up, to be alert.  It’s now time to study the word of God, to take it at its word, not to twist it, not to cherry pick and chose only what we want for our own selfish needs.  This is the time to stand firm in the entire word of God!  To hold fast to the truth, to what the good Lord tells us is the truth.

Time is not on our side my friends!  We don’t have much of it left.  As the world falls apart, bible prophecy is coming to pass!  God’s plan is unfolding quickly, and He will return quickly as well.  In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye!  Be ready, be close to your Creator when He returns.  Know the truth, the real truth, and stand for what is good.

Listen to the Lord and do not be led astray!  Let the Holy Spirit be your guide.  Heaven is real, and the things of heaven are upon us.  God has given us authority to use the things of heaven to fight the battles here on earth.  What is His are ours, and His is never-ending!  It’s all according to our faith my friends, according to your faith.

Jesus Christ, God Almighty, hear my prayers.  Listen to the cries of Your people, feel the pain and the suffering upon the earth.  Comfort those who need it, and protect all those who call You Lord!  We are Your children, we bow down to You in humble adoration, with hearts for You and You alone.  Give us all the wisdom to clearly see the truth and to understand.  Bestow upon us Your knowledge, mercy, and grace.  You are awesome, mighty, great, all-powerful, and all-knowing.  It is You who we worship, You who we praise, and You who we try to love with all of our hearts!  Forgive us of our sins, and lead us towards heaven.  Give us the power to stand firm in our faith, to believe all that You tell us is the truth.  Allow Your Holy Spirit to perform great works in us and through us, all for Your glory!  In Jesus name I pray, Amen

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!

Praise the Lord. Thank you Father God in Heaven for Gordon’s prayers and commentaries. May the Holy Spirit continue to inspire Gordon to tell the world of your free gift of salvation and be a guiding light for the lost. In Jesus name Amen. A truly wonderful prayer Gordon. Thank you

Does God give you grace until you overcome your sin? I struggle so hard with somethings and know it will be God’s strength in me that over comes them because I am too weak. If we are struggling when he comes back will we be left behind?

    • Gordon King

Thanks for your comment Rebecca, good to hear from you!

I’m not really sure just what you are asking in your first question? Does God give us grace until we overcome our sin? This is what I believe to be the truth, God’s grace and mercy is never-ending! He loves us immeasurably, unconditionally, and forever.

When we are saved, then we are saved forever! Scripture tells us that we have been sealed by the Holy Spirit, a seal which cannot be broken by anyone, our names written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, and destined for eternity in heaven with Jesus Christ! This is what I read from scripture, this is what I believe.

We all struggle with things in life Rebecca, you are not alone in this. None of us can do the right thing without God, we need God to help us and see us through. Struggling is part of being a Christian, through both trials and tribulations, pain and suffering, God builds our character, our strength, and our faith. The question should be: “Who do you turn to when times get tough, who do you turn to when times are good?”

We must first seek God in “all” things, whether good or bad. Put God first, seek His face, look to the things of heaven above! This is what matters, this is what is truly important.

So to answer your last question Rebecca, of course you will go to heaven. As long as you have truly accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then you will go to heaven, no matter what you have done since that time!

However, there are many Christians who have turned away from God, many who live a sinful life, and many who support ungodly principles and values. And they too shall enter heaven if they have truly been saved, yet they shall suffer the consequences of their actions while here on earth! They are acting out of God’s will and are separating themselves from the love and help of God. They are not performing God’s will on earth, but rather living for themselves.

We will all reap what we sow, this is a biblical principal. Even as believers, we still reap what we sow. I was a prodigal son for many years, I lived in sin, planted seeds of unrighteousness, and have since paid the price for my actions. Yet, I was still saved! And God allowed things to happen in my life and the life of my family to bring me to my knees, broken, weak, and helpless.

I think one of the most difficult things for most Christians to understand is just how much God really loves us! Our minds are so finite that we cannot fathom the intensity and awesomeness of God’s love, mercy, and forgiveness. God loves you more than you could possibly understand, He is always with you whether or not you feel His presence.

Our God is an Awesome God, Loving, Merciful, Forgiving, Kind, and Ever-present!

      God bless sister! Maranatha!

Amen. Thy will be done, Father. And thank you for always being there for us. Help us to reflect the fruits of Your Spirit in each of us daily in a world determine to disintegrate Your light. Come into our hearts Lord and abide within us. Always in Your Blessed Name, Amen.

Nicely said Gordon, and so true. People for centuries have been cherry picking Scriptures’ to fit their lifestyle not God’s. Pagan rituals were introduced into His house and people are confused to this day.

I will also add the Sabbath to your list. The true Sabbath created for man to rest (Mark 2:27), to remember God’s omnipotence in the creation of the universe, to commune with Him, to contemplate His majesty, His love for beauty and order, for helping fellowman. It’s the only law God tells us to REMEMBER to keep (Ex. 20:8).
Scripture tells us we will be known by keeping His Sabbath, His commandments and Jesus’ testimony in our hearts. He who loves Him keeps His Sabbath (Rev. 12:17).
Eze.20:12 “Moreover also I gave them my Sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them.” It’s NOT just a Jewish law, it’s for all people. God didn’t distinguish it just for the Jews, they were to spread His word to all nations, this includes the Sabbath and all of us. (Mark 2:27,28).

God started creation from the darkness of space ‘then there was light’, hence SUNday. In His calendar a full day begins/consists from nightfall (sundown) to sundown (Gen.1:2-5). Sundown Saturday(darkness) to Sunday(light), come sundown is one day. And so forth through the week till we get to sundown Friday to sundown Saturday – God’s Sabbath. God established a full week by ending on the seventh day. The day of completion, He rested on the Sabbath and made it Holy. Exo.20:11 “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them, and rested the seventh day, wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Who is man to change, add, subtract anything that is written in His Holy Manuel. And that’s what it is a Holy instruction book with lots of history to back it up. As you point out G, God means what He says and says what He means!
    Past, present and future.

Solomon told us nothing is new under the sun (Ecc.1:9). Everything is repeated and if one takes the time to search history with what Scriptures’ tells us one will see how true and accurate are the words written within; up to this day with events unfolding and being fulfilled right in front of our eyes, ‘for those who choose to see’. And beyond, for God warns us before it happens so no one is caught unaware (Matt.24:25). And John 14:29 “And now I have told you before it comes to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.”

We need to stop hiding on what man or our feelings tells us and begin to search the Scriptures’ ourselves, rely on God’s word with prayer. His words are true and faithful. He alone is love and came to us to show us this love because man had forgotten. We need to emulate Jesus, stand with Him, in Him we have rest, forgiveness, mercy and love. The Sabbath reflex’s His essences and in us honoring Him, He will also honor us. (Isa.58:13)

Hos.13:4 “Yet I am the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know no god but me: for there is no savior beside me.” Is exactly what you said G. He alone can save us from this darkness we are in.
1John 2:15 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” In truth we will persevere… God is truth! God is good. God IS love! God bless. Maranatha!
Thank you Gordon for a thought provoking post. God bless, my friend.

Thanks SweetJava! Yes, the word of God is the truth whether we choose to believe it or not! And like I have said many times before, just because we don’t believe something to be the truth does not make it otherwise, if in fact it is the truth.

      God bless SweetJava! Maranatha!

I like to make clear the first day of the week came out of the darkness into light hence SUNday. The night before (darkness) was not the first Saturday/Sabbath. I only mention it (Saturday-darkness) to illustrate the 7 day week God established at creation. From sundown to sundown = one day, starting with Sunday and ending with Saturday. Man changed God’s calendar on his own authority. There is no evidence in Scripture of any change. Full moon to full moon is a month in His calendar, hence each month has 30 days. The months began in the Spring with the full moon Spring equinox, everything is renewing/renewed and fresh. Passover brings new beginnings, from death to life. And so forth throughout the year. Again not just a Jewish system but God’s, for all of us. Through the centuries man made calendars have changed God’s original one. Cherry picking what suits man not what is right in God’s eyes.
He is in control and everything eventually comes together for His glory. Keep looking up! God bless.

So Gordon, are you saying; believers who claims to be saved are really going to hell for not supporting national Israel and loving the Jewish people. There was no national Israel or a cohesive centralized recognizable Jewish people from 72 A.D. until 1948. That was 1,876 years, what was the believer to do about the Jewish people and national Israel during all that time??? I supposed Christ must have been their total sufficiency during all those years without anything added as a requirement for salvation until 1948.

    Maranatha!

No brother not at all! Please read the post again. I said in the beginning, once saved always saved! We are sealed by the Holy Spirit.

What I did say is that some believers are not in the will of God.

      God bless Ethin!

  5. Ethin

The issue with the believer not being in the will of God because of non support for Israel and the Jewish people is more a matter about correct biblical education than rebellion or rejection of biblical truth. Many major Christian denominations teach that once a believer dies they go to heaven, end of story. No end times theology, bypass Israel go straight to heaven for eternity.
Many other Christian denominations teach that the promises made to Israel in the bible have been transferred to the Church because from about 400 AD to 1948 nobody could ever see Israel becoming a nation again. This is what is known as replacement theology.
These are not good or accurate historical markers for the church because when Israel returned to their homeland and became a nation in 1948, the denominational churches refused to change position and recognize what God had done in fulfilling his promises especially the ones in Eze. 36 for the Land to be restored and 37 for resurrected Life as a people.
If you say believers are out of the will of God for not supporting Israel and loving the Jewish people then are they committing a biblical sin/rebellion because sin is what puts us out of the will of God. So, are we talking about a believer intentionally sinning by not supporting Israel and what are the consequences of the will of God being violated because of their ignorance or rebellion or sin???

    • Gordon King

      Thanks for your comment Ethin.

I don’t have all of the answers nor will I claim to. I believe what the bible tells me, and this is what I see. You can agree or disagree. As for the consequences, who knows. We will all find out these answers soon enough.

  6. Ethin

The previous comment was a continuation from me, its Ethin again.
I also want to deal with Galatians 3:26-29 with regards to the church and the Jews.
26: For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
27: For as many of you as were baptized in Christ have put on Christ.
28: There is NEITHER JEW NOR GREEK, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
29: And if you are Christ’s you are ABRAHAMS SEED and heirs according to the promise.
Certainly then if we have faith in Christ, baptized in Christ, have put on Christ, we have no national title as a Jew or Gentile for salvation other than being one in Christ Jesus, but yet we are Abrahams seed. This places us in the will of God without mentioning support for national Israel or love for the Jewish people. Paul chose not to include that aspect of a physical nation and people but rather spiritualized it to include believers without the burden to have national and people affections.

    • Gordon King

Ethin, I see where you are coming from, however, I disagree. We are from the seed of Abraham, just as the Jews, yet most Jews rejected Christ. I believe the apostle Paul was speaking about those who believe in Christ, Jew and Gentile, not unsaved Jews. What I see Paul as saying is that whether or not we are Jew or Gentile, if we have been saved then we are one in Christ, does not have anything to do with the nation of Israel itself. He is telling us that as believers we are all one and the same in Christ.

      God bless!

    • Gordon King

Thank you for your comments Ethin, and for bringing up these points. I shall continue to study God’s word in search of the truth. These are things in which I believe are important, and will require more time and much effort on my part. And if I find myself wrong in my beliefs, then I shall be the one to admit that I was wrong. The truth is what I search for, this is what I seek, not for anything of or for myself, but for the Lord and His glory.

      God bless my friend! Maranatha!
