Selfishness in the Church!

prosperity gospel

Commentary By:  Gordon King

How many times have you heard a television preacher teaching about wealth and prosperity?  About how you too can become financially independent, prosperous, and live a life of luxury?  Many churches today seem like “self-help” Christianity, then true bible based faith!

Just how many churches teach of these things and how God can give you whatever you want out of life, and all the things that He can do for you?

Not that these things are bad, but shouldn’t we as Christians be focused on God?

Philippians 2:21

“For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.”

Prosperity preachers and teachers are taking away what it means to be a Christian.  They are degrading just what it means to follow Christ!  Their main focus is on what God can do for you, how you can get whatever you want from God for a better life!

Like I said, there is nothing wrong about having money or being financially independent, unless this is your main focus.  There is nothing wrong about wanting a better life.

However, with that being said, Christianity is not about “self”, it is about laying down our lives in order to serve God.  The world is focused on self, on selfishness, and not on serving others.  Christianity should be moving in the opposite direction!

Philippians 2:3-4

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

1 Corinthians 10:24

“Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.”

Ours is not to seek our own lives, but to seek God!  We should lay down our lives and pick up our cross.  We need to do the will of God in our lives, myself included.  Seek ye first the kingdom of God and these things shall be added unto you!

Matthew 6:33

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Do not strive for the sake of prosperity, strive for the Lord and the things which are holy and righteous.  Live for God and His kingdom, look to spiritual things and the things of heaven above.

Romans 8:7

“For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.”

The lies of Satan, seek for yourself, gain riches in this world, do whatever it takes to make it big!  Don’t worry about your neighbor, help yourself.

Hebrews 13:16

“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

We should be striving to perform the will of God Almighty!  To help those in need, to comfort those in pain, to encourage, to build up, to spread the truth, and to make disciples of all nations.

1 John 3:17

“But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?”

The world is full of selfishness, of self-centered thought, of what you can gain for yourself.  This is a prime example of how the world is today.

As believers in Jesus Christ, we need to check ourselves, to look in the mirror and take a look at our own lives.  Introspection is something that we should do on a daily basis.  Ask yourself, is what I am thinking and doing in line with the will of God?  Is it in line with the word of God?  If not, then we must change in order to be more like God.

None of us are perfect, and we all need to cleanse ourselves of sin and unrighteousness daily.  It is only through the blood of Jesus that we are able to do so.  Being a Christian is a daily process, a personal relationship with the God of the universe!  We must repent and ask Him to forgive us of our sins, and He will.

Let us all keep our relationship with God close to our hearts.  This is not a time to be sliding away from the Lord, but to be building our relationship in order to be more like Christ!

John 3:30

He must increase, but I must decrease.”

I see the world moving further away from God, of many Christians falling away from God!  I sense the church being divided, and many believers accepting lies as the truth.  Can a Christian be saved and still accept lies as truth?  Yes!  One example are Christians who support gay marriage and abortion.  If they do, are they still saved?  I believe so.  However, I can’t say what will happen if they do, I don’t know.  But I do know that they are not in the will of God!

As for me, my will is to be in the will of my Father in heaven!  I believe His word to be all truth, and I will not twist it to meet my own selfish needs and desires.

Christianity is not about us!  It’s all about God!  It’s about who He is and what He has done!  It’s about the Creator of the universe, our Creator!  God, Jesus Christ, Elohim, Yaweh, Jehovah, I AM WHO I AM!

I pray the Lord washes me clean of sin and inequity.  I pray for Him to fill me with His love and wisdom.  I pray for Him to show me His ways, and to make Himself known to me on a daily basis.  I pray for Him to perform His will in my life, and to make me less and Him more!  In Jesus name I pray, Amen

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!
