Be careful what you say, you just might cut someone!

Commentary By:  Gordon King

It really amazes me at how some people can be so cruel to other human beings.  How they can treat them with malice and disregard their feelings.  That for some strange reason it does not even dawn on them that what they are doing is harming another person.

There are those in the world who feel that they can do or say anything that they desire with no ill effects, that it’s their right as a human being to do this and that it really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about it.  This is arrogance of the utmost.  It is pride, arrogance, selfishness, and wicked.

Have you ever heard the phrase “sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me”?  This was a very common phrase while I was a child growing up in America.  At one time I even believed it.  But then why is it that when people do attack me verbally that it does hurt?  That it does damage the psyche?

Words are very powerful and at times even more powerful then physical harm.  The word of God is sharper than a two edged sword!  God’s words have more power than anything else on earth.  Even so, human words are also powerful and can cut to the bone!

Some people are so arrogant that they only see themselves, what it will do to them and for them.  They only feel what others do to them, not what they are doing to others.  This my friends is very ungodly and unholy.  It is in direct opposition of what God’s laws and principles are, what Jesus Christ teaches us.  It is all about “self” and not about others.  Jesus told us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.

I’ve recently heard a man say that everyone should just say whatever is on their mind, that they should be truthful and honest regarding their feelings at the moment.  Really?!  Is this what we should do?  He said that if we did then the world would be a better place.  I strongly disagree and feel that this would only start world war three, spread evil, hatred, and discontent!

Our emotions, our feelings are fleeting at best.  How we feel one moment will probably change a moment later.  To spew from our mouths how we feel when we know that it will hurt someone else is not from God.  Remember what your mother taught you “If you don’t have anything good to say then don’t say anything at all”.  This is true my friends.  If we don’t have anything to say of meaning or value, then don’t say anything at all, keep your mouth shut as this is godly and holy.  Just because you have something on your mind does not mean that it is a good thing or that it needs to be shared with others.  As believers in Jesus Christ we are to have “self-control”.

The only time we need to say anything contrary to another person would be to correct them, not to cut them to pieces!  Even if we see something that we don’t like or don’t agree with does not mean that we have to say anything about it.  Of course I believe that if it is contrary to God’s laws and principles then we are to uphold them.  However we must do so out of love and respect.

This is where we must be coming from, love, respect, and the laws and principles of God Almighty!

The world is full of people who just spew nonsense and hatred from their mouths, without regard for the welfare of another human being, with malice towards those who have done us no harm, and even if they did Jesus told us to love our enemies!

Standing up for the values of God is to live godly, to be righteous, and to live Christ-like.  To stand for Christ, to address issues which are ungodly and unholy, is not bad as long as we do it right.  God loves everyone, but He hates the sin!  This is where the world is blind, this is where they cannot differentiate the values of or understand Christianity.  However, there are always some bad apples in the bunch, giving Christianity a bad name.

As a Christian, a believer in Jesus Christ, we are to love everyone, even those who come against us.  We should speak to encourage, to help, to spread the word of God, and to bring the lost to salvation.  We should speak out against evil from love, with respect and understanding.

The world does not understand Christians, nor do they care to try.  Christians are a peculiar people, of whom just don’t make much sense to those of a secular world.

Love your neighbor, love your enemies and use self-control.  Let not your hearts be troubled and know that God is with you always.  Rejoice in persecution against you for Christ’s namesake, and know that your reward in heaven will be great!

God bless my friends!  Maranatha!

  2. Thank you for this beautiful article! God bless you!
Proverbs 17:27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
Proverbs 29:20 20 Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

  3. Amen! Powerful message Gordon, thank you.
One speaks what is in the heart…
as Our Lord said, “O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Matt.12:34
We show our true colors when we speak – whether good or evil. The day is coming when we will be justified or condemned by our words and actions.
    God bless us all.

  4. Thank you for sharing this Gordon. It is something I need to keep in the forefront of my mind. Sometimes when the daggers are spewed at me its hard not to respond in like. As Christians we have added responsibility to take the higher ground and be as Christ like as possible. It truly is amazing how many people watch how we react and listen to what we say to others.
    God Bless You,
    Rebecca

  5. I think that we all need to remember this Rebecca, even as Christians we sometimes react before thinking. We even struggle at times to keep from saying the wrong thing or too much. God bless!
