Commentary By: Gordon King
The greatest of all commandments: Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is to love your neighbor as yourself.
‘Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” ‘
Loving God is one thing, but we are also commanded to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Just what does Jesus mean by our “neighbors”? I don’t think that He is just talking about our neighbors, but about everyone else besides ourselves.
Jesus also tells us to love our enemies as well, to bless them and do good to them, and to pray for them.
“But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,”
Therefore, we are to love our enemies and do good to them. Wow! This can often be a difficult task, yet we are commanded to do so! I don’t know about you, but I find it difficult to love people who hate me. We must find strength from the Holy Spirit and follow His lead. For we cannot do such a thing of our own strength and wisdom.
As Christians we are to love those who hate us, our enemies, but also all sinners! We must love the sinners, all of them. Whether they be murderers, adulterers, homosexuals, drug addicts, liars, cheats, etc. For at one time we were like they are now. God loved us first, and we are to love them first as well!
Many people in the world believe that Christians are intolerant haters. However this could not be further from the truth. Christians hate the sin, but love the sinner. This is how we are supposed to behave. Yet, I feel that they may be correct in some cases. But, this is not from God! God loves all people no matter what sin they have committed. He loves the people, but hates the sin.
So when we see people who claim to be Christians, yet say that God hates sinners because of their sin, they are not speaking for God but for themselves! God loves them dearly and wants nothing more than for them to repent of their sin and to love Him back. That is why He gave His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ as a sacrifice for our sins. While we were still sinners.
So lets all remember as Christians, as children of the Most High God of the Universe, that we need to love everyone! We are to go out into the world and love the sinners. That’s not to say that we should live like them, but we need to live among them. To shine our light, to show them the love of God. So that they can see His love, His forgiveness, His mercy. So that they too can know God and have eternal life.
God Almighty, give us the strength, the wisdom, and the courage to love those who hate us. To love those among us who are sinners, the lost, the unsaved. Enlighten us and give us clarity. Show us the way. In Jesus name I pray, Amen
God bless my friends! Until next time.
