Diane Foley, the journalist’s mother, called his murder ‘just evil’ and in a heartfelt tribute the journalist’s parents called on Islamic State to ‘spare the innocents’

(SOURCE)  The family of James Foley called him a “martyr for freedom” and appealed directly to his murderers to release other hostages.

Speaking outside their home in Rochester, New Hampshire, where a faded yellow ribbon was tied around a tree, John and Diane Foley called their son an “inspiration” and told how he “would not want us to hate or be bitter”.

Through tears John Foley, a physician, said they wanted to “beg compassion and mercy” for Isil hostage Steven Sotloff, adding: “There’s no reason for this slaughter.”

He said: “Jim is free. We know he’s in God’s hands. He’s in heaven. We’re so proud of him. None of it makes any sense. We miss his courage, his love, his determination, his laugh and his smile. He was motivated by what he thought was doing the right thing.”

Mrs Foley said: “Jim is just innocent and they knew it. It’s that hatred that Jim was against.

“We implore the kidnappers to spare the lives of the remaining hostages. Like Jim, they are innocents. They have no control over American government policy in Iraq, Syria or anywhere in the world.”

She also called his murder “just evil”.
