Psalm 83 and Ezekiel 38 Wars

Pslam 83 Ezekiel 38Commentary By:  Gordon King

The tension in the Middle East has never been higher than it is today.  Wars rage and terror escalates daily.  Evil permeates the landscape, lies and delusions fill the air.  The hatred and evil against the nation of Israel is almost overwhelming.  Nations and Kingdoms threaten to wipe Israel off the face of the map.  Islamic militants are growing in numbers and in strength.  The numbers of deaths and casualties seems insurmountable as these groups continue their heinous rampage throughout the Middle East.

How much longer can this go on without coming to an explosive head?  What must happen before the evil and violence de-escalates?  Could we be headed for a biblical prophetic war in the Middle East?  A war against the nation of Israel.

It seems to me that we could see the prophetic war spoken of in Psalm 83 at any time now.  The chaos, confusion, and terror is already in place.  The countries spoken of are all in arms and ready to strike.  The hatred towards Israel from its surrounding countries is at an all time high.

Psalm 83:1-8 (NKJV)

Do not keep silent, O God!
Do not hold Your peace,
And do not be still, O God!
For behold, Your enemies make a tumult;
And those who hate You have lifted up their head.
They have taken crafty counsel against Your people,
And consulted together against Your sheltered ones.
They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation,
That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”

For they have consulted together with one consent;
They form a confederacy against You:
The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites;
Moab and the Hagrites;
Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek;
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
Assyria also has joined with them;
They have helped the children of Lot. Selah

According to Bill Salus the countries listed in Psalm 83 are listed as such below:

No one knows for sure when this event will take place.  The bible tells us that it will, the prophetic atmosphere is ripe.  The Islamic world in the Middle East is out of control and getting worse by the day.  Shall we soon see this prophecy being fulfilled?  Perhaps we will sooner than later.

Another bible prophecy which many confuse with Psalm 83 is Ezekiel 38.

Ezekiel 38:1-6 (NKJV)

Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with you.

These nations are not all easy to identify.  According to Joel Rosenberg:

Gog is more than likely a powerful political leader.

The land of Magog – Russia.

Persia – Iran.

Ethiopia – Cush.

Libya – Put.

Gomer – Turkey.

Togarmah – Turkey and Central Asia.

But Ezekiel also mentions many people with thee.  Are there others not specifically mentioned?

Notice that the countries listed in the Psalm 83 war are not listed in the Ezekiel 38 war.  This may be due to the fact that the countries listed in the Psalm 83 war were taken out.  Perhaps they no longer exist, or they have been weakened to the point of survival.  I belive that the Psalm 83 war will occur prior to the Ezekiel 38 war.

Many bible scholars are of the belief that the Ezekiel 38 war will occur before Christs return and others believe that it is the battle of “Armageddon” occurring at the second coming of Christ.

I have read some passages from the bible which may lead me to believe otherwise.  For years I have been taught that the “Ezekiel 38” war was going to occur prior to the return of Christ, now I am not so sure of that.

Ezekiel 38:7-17 (NKJV)

“Prepare yourself and be ready, you and all your companies that are gathered about you; and be a guard for them. After many days you will be visited. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many people on the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely. You will ascend, coming like a storm, covering the land like a cloud, you and all your troops and many peoples with you.”

10 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On that day it shall come to pass that thoughts will arise in your mind, and you will make an evil plan: 11 You will say, ‘I will go up against a land of unwalled villages; I will go to a peaceful people, who dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates’—

12 to take plunder and to take booty, to stretch out your hand against the waste places that are again inhabited, and against a people gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell in the midst of the land. 13 Sheba, Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and all their young lions will say to you, ‘Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?’

14 “Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On that day when My people Israel dwell safely, will you not know it? 15 Then you will come from your place out of the far north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great company and a mighty army. 16 You will come up against My people Israel like a cloud, to cover the land. It will be in the latter days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me, when I am hallowed in you, O Gog, before their eyes.” 17 Thus says the Lord God: “Are you he of whom I have spoken in former days by My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied for years in those days that I would bring you against them?”

 Ezekiel speaks of Israel dwelling safely in the land, and that they have unwalled villages, neither bars nor gates.  Well, I don’t know about you, but I cannot see this happening anytime in the near future.  How can they dwell safely in the land before the Millennium? I don’t think it will be possible, not without gates or walls.

However, during the Millennium period they shall dwell safely with the Lord.  Remember, there will be people still alive after the second coming of Christ to the earth.  They are the ones who will repopulate the earth.

I believe that the battle of “Ezekiel 38” just may take place after the thousand-year reign of Christ.

Revelation 20:1-3 (KJV)

And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.”

Satan was bound for a thousand years during the “Millennium” period, then he was loosed afterwards in order to gather together the nations against God.  I believe this may actually be the “Ezekiel 38” war.

Revelation 20:7-9

“7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,

And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.”

You notice the countries involved here?  The leader Gog and Magog, who will gather “them” together to battle.  The surrounded the saints and the beloved city (Jerusalem) to make war.  God destroyed them all.

Ezekiel says that in the latter years, this means towards the end, it could mean before the second coming of Christ, but it could also mean towards the end of the Millennium.  He says that the Israelites will dwell safely, all of them.  Then he says that Gog and Magog along with many other nations will come against Israel.

Ezekiel 38:8-9(KJV)

“8 After many days thou shalt be visited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against the mountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them.

Thou shalt ascend and come like a storm, thou shalt be like a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee.”

The prophet Zachariah speaks of a battle against Israel also, however this is obviously at the second coming of Christ when He steps down on the mount of Olives.

Zechariah 14 (KJV)

Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.

For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.

And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.”

The bible only mentions the word “Armageddon” one time in Revelation 16:16.  I believe that the battle of “Armageddon” is to occur at this time that Zechariah is speaking of.

Revelation 16:16-21

And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

18 And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great.

19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

20 And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

21 And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail; for the plague thereof was exceeding great.”

Whatever time of the battles, they are coming.  Whatever name you give to them, they will happen.  Jesus is coming, He is all-knowing, ours is to study His words, to seek the truth.  Think about it!

God Bless my friends, until next time!

  1. Shalom from Israel, Gordon. I can say with the utmost confidence, according to the Bible, the world’s analysis of the Gog of Magog war and who the modern-day players are is mostly wrong. The Bible is a Middle Eastern centered book. The prophets all spoke of Gog, according to Ez 38:17 “Thus says the Lord GOD, “Are you the one of whom I spoke in former days through My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days for many years that I would bring you against them?” When did the prophets ever speak of Gog? They did not use this name. They called him “the Assyrian”, “Pharoah of Egypt”, “Prince of Tyre”, “King of Babylon”, “King of the North”, etc. “Gog” is a title, as are these others, who are “types” of the Antichrist. Please read Walid Shoebat’s, “God’s War on Terror.” Your views of Biblical prophecy will forever be changed. All those ancient leaders of the above nations are today, in our modern-day world, Islamic. I would suggest to you that Psalm 83 and Ezekiel 38 are closely related. God does not suddenly switch gears, and focus for thousands of years on the Middle East, and then switch to being focused on Russia and China. I sincerely hope you will read Walid Shoebat’s book — he is a former Muslim PLO terrorist. I assure you he is not a fraud. I know him personally. I pray God’s blessings upon you as you seek out the truth.

  2. Hello Deborah and thank you for your comment. I hear so many prophecy teachers speak of these wars and tell us that Gog is a figure head, but that Magog is Russia. However, I have watched Walid Shoebat speak of Magog as being Muslims. I have also read Joel Richardson’s book, “The MidEast Beast”, who agrees with Walid.
    I am not certain who they will actually end up being. However, I find it very interesting that Revelation 20 speaks of Gog and Magog being gathered together for battle after the thousand year reign of Christ.
    God Bless Deborah! May the Lord give us all His insight, knowledge, and wisdom to understand all truth!
