Three dead, officer shot on Indy’s near northeast side

Indianapolis shooting 30 May 2014INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Three people are dead and an officer was shot on the near northeast side of Indianapolis Friday morning.

It happened around 7:10 a.m. in the 2600 block of North Dearborn Street, which is near North 30th Street and North Sherman Drive.

Police say the officer was initially called to the scene on the report of a woman screaming. Police say two women were found dead inside a home. At this point it’s unclear how the women died.

Officials with IMPD say a male suspect shot at the officer as he walked to the house. The officer was hit in a bulletproof vest and then returned shots. The suspect was found dead outside in between two houses. It’s unknown at this time if the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound or if he was shot and killed by the officer.

The officer was taken to the hospital in good condition after being shot. Police say the bulletproof vest he was wearing saved his life.

Dearborn was closed from 30th Street down to 25th Street. Police said because of the complexities of the shooting, the on-scene investigation would be going on for hours.
