Commentary by: Gordon King
I was reading through 1 Corinthians and found this verse quite interesting and so true.
1 Corinthians 8
“Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. 2 And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. 3 But if anyone loves God, this one is known by Him.”
In my own personal experience in life, I find that the more I learn about something, the less I really know. If that makes any sense. It’s so simple, yet so true. When I was a teenager, like teenagers today, I thought that I knew everything. As I grew older and gained more knowledge, I found that there was so much more that I didn’t know. That I had so much more learning to do.
The same holds true for me today, specifically in the scriptures. When I learn more about the scriptures, I see that there is so much that I don’t know about the scriptures. There is so much more understanding and knowledge for me to gain. I believe this is what Paul is telling us in verse 2 of 1 Corinthians.
I also think that he is telling us not to get puffed up and arrogant. We need to understand that none of us knows it all. That all of us have more learning and growing ahead of us. Paul tells us in verse 1 that knowledge “puffs up”. We all must be cognizant of our own lack of knowledge. Although it may seem to ourselves that we are very knowledgeable, we do not know things as we need to. We will never have complete knowledge until we are with our Father in heaven.
1 Corinthians 13:12
“For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.”
1 Corinthians 8:3 tells us that if we love God, then He knows us. In 1 Corinthians 13:12 Paul tells us that we only partly know things now, but when we are in heaven we shall have understanding and knowledge, just as the Lord knows us completely. We shall see God, know God, and love God in person, face to face.
Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name, hear my prayers Lord. I pray for your blessings, insight, wisdom and knowledge for all those who love You. I pray for our love to grow and flourish, while our pride and arrogance vanishes. Make us more like you Lord, keep us on the path to righteousness. May each and everyday we become more Christ like in our thoughts, ways, and deeds. I pray this in the Holy name of Jesus. Amen
