What or who should we fear?

Fear black background

Commentary by:  Gordon King

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”  Franklin D. Roosevelt

Those are the famous words of the 32nd President of the United States of America.  Do you agree with him?  Is it true that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself?

I say baloney!

The bible tells us that the only thing to fear is God!  The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.

Proverbs 9:10

10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

God loves us, He is with us, He comforts us.  To be a child of God is to have no fear of the world.

Psalm 23:4

4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

The bible also tells us that we are not to fear those that can kill us physically, but cannot kill us spiritually.  If we choose to follow God then we are blessed and should have no fear.

Matthew 10:28

28 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”

1 Peter 3:13-14

13 ‘And who is he who will harm you if you become followers of what is good? 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.” ‘

So who is it that can kill our bodies but not our souls?  It includes humans, animals, demons, and yes even Satan.  Satan can destroy us physically, and he can cause us to stray away from God.  He can tempt us and lead us to hell.  But it’s not Satan who sends us to hell, it’s God Almighty.  I know that I’m going to get all kinds of flack for saying that.  But it’s the truth.  However, you must understand that it’s God who gives us a choice to make, so although He may cast us into the lake of fire, it’s the choice we’ve made for ourselves.

Revelation 20:15

15 “And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.”

The bible tells us over and over again to not fear, but to be strong in the Lord, to keep our faith in the Lord.

Isaiah 41:10

10 “Fear not, for I am with you;
Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you,
Yes, I will help you,
I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Psalm 56:3-4

3 “Whenever I am afraid,
I will trust in You.
In God (I will praise His word),
In God I have put my trust;
I will not fear.
What can flesh do to me?”

1 John 4:18

18 “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.”

God the Father is a Righteous God.  He is Holy, Pure, and Kind.  He is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent.  He is perfect, never-failing, and always the same, never-changing.  He is the same today as He was yesterday, will be tomorrow, and in the future.

Let us fear the one who deserves the fear, God Almighty.  For this is the beginning of wisdom.  Let us gain knowledge of the Lord, for this is understanding.

Father in heaven, please hear my prayers.  May you shed your light upon a dark, dark world.  May your presence be known to those who love you.  Make us understand your ways, fear your presence, and worship at your feet.  For you are worthy of our praise, love, and honor.  Lead us unto the paths which make us pure, into the light that makes us holy, and close to the lamb of God who cleanses us of our all our sin.  Thank you for your grace, mercy, blessings, and gifts.   Amen

God Bless!

  1. God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes, there shall be no more sorrow, crying, death , or pain and there shall be no more curse. This speaks of a time in the eternal state when there will be nothing at all to fear. Behold I am coming quickly, even so come, Lord Jesus.
