What is the job of a Christian?

Commentary by:  Gordon King

I have received much criticism for supporting Phil Robertson and his comments about gays and homosexuals.  A lot of the criticism was from other believers in Jesus Christ.  Telling me that I am unloving towards homosexuals.  That I am spreading hatred, evil and violence.  I follow the teachings of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!  I am in no way perfect, in fact never said that I was.  But, I am forgiven and saved by the mercy and grace of our Father in heaven.

2 Timothy 3

3 “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!’

Romans 1:26-28

26 “For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.  28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;”

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

9 “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.”

Some individuals believe that all we are to do as Christians is love everyone, and all will work together for peace on earth.  That we should not teach others that homosexuality is a sin.  To just love them and God will take everyone to heaven.  That everything will be fine for all if we just love everyone.

I say “HogWash”!  What in the world did these people eat for breakfast?!  Do they not read the bible?  Are they only regurgitating what they heard at church or read in some book?  Certainly not from the bible!

1 Thessalonians 2:4

4 “But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.”

Of course we are to love one another, even our enemies we are to love.  This is a great commandment from our heavenly Father.

John 15:12

12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

But I say, if we turn our backs on the written word of God Almighty and do not teach what He has taught us, is that true love?  Is this what love has come to, holding hands around the campfire singing “Kumbaya”?!

I say Phooey!  For us to truly love one another we must be truthful and honest.  We must tell others that they are destined to Hell without Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior!  We must tell them the error of their ways.  We are to reprove and rebuke, for it is written in the true and infallible Word of God.

2 Timothy 4

2 “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.”
3 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”

We are not merely “children” of God, we are “saints” and “priests” of the Most High God of the Universe!

1 Peter 2:9

9 “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;”

Revelation 1:6

6 “and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

The Word of God does not only contain the commandment to love!  If it did, then why is there even a bible in the first place?  We wouldn’t need it, love would be sufficient enough.  But the bible does contain more than just the commandment to love one another, much, much more.  It tells us how to inherit eternal salvation, live a godly life, how to be more Christ like, what the future holds, and what we should be looking for in the future, bible prophecy!

2 Timothy 3:16-17

16 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Hebrews 4:12

12″ For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The Word of God is not merely to teach us to love, however this is one of the greatest commandments, I am not disputing that.  It also teaches us how to become more Christ like, how to be stronger and well equipped believers, and how we as humans are to live.

1 Timothy 4

13 “Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.”
16 “Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.”

2 Timothy 3

10 “But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance, 11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra—what persecutions I endured.”

Mark 16

15 “And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”

It is our duty, our commandment from God to spread the Word, to rebuke and reprove, to lead the lost to eternal salvation!  We must love everyone, yes even our enemies, however, this does not mean to keep quiet leading them to believe all is well without first repenting and accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior!

God bless everyone!  May the Lord of Abraham, Issac and Jacob protect you, guide you and give you peace!  Amen
