First Minister Alex Salmond said that given “an incident of this scale we must all prepare ourselves for the likelihood” of deaths while confirming on Twitter that a police chopper was involved in the tragic accident at The Clutha pub.

The helicopter carrying two police officers and a civilian pilot came down around 10:25 p.m. local time, according to Scottish police. People remain trapped inside some five hours after the crash.

Police sat there are “a number of casualties” but have yet to provide concrete numbers. About 125 firefighters remain on scene pulling survivors from the building, which is unstable and unsafe.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as people rushed through a cloud of dust to get out, some with bad gashes to the head and other injuries.

Grace MacLean, who was inside the pub at the time of the crash, said she was “having a nice time” when there was a “whoosh” noise — then smoke.

“The band were laughing and we were all joking that the band had made the roof come down,” she told the BBC.

“They carried on playing and then it started to come down more and someone started screaming and then the whole pub just filled with dust. You couldn’t see anything, you couldn’t breathe.”

Glasgow ska band Esperanza were due to play a show at the pub. On their official Facebook page around midnight they wrote: “It seems that the band are all OK. Not so sure about everyone else.”

The band later updated their page to say: “There are a couple of our friends still uncounted for…” They hope they’ll write them back.

Crash witness Wesley Shearer described helping fellow pub goers escape while Tweeting a photo of the chaotic scene.

“This is unbelievable. Just spent 20 minutes pulling people out the bar. Apparently a helicopter crashed on the roof,” he wrote.
