The shooting happened at the LU Women’s Annex II, in the 3000 block of Odd Fellows Rd.

Shortly before 4:15 a.m, the student and the LU official were engaged in a “physical altercation,” said police Lt. Dave Gearhart.

Gearhart said this was an isolated incident and “there is no ongoing concern for the safety of the students or the community.”

Police declined to identify the student, pending notification of his family.

Gearhart said police are still in the preliminary stages of their investigation, and more information is expected to be released this afternoon.

“Liberty University confirms initial reports that there was an altercation between a Liberty University Emergency Services Officer and a male student that led to a shooting last night at a women’s-only residential hall (Residential Annex II) that is under investigation by the Lynchburg Police Department,” according to an earlier release from the university.
