Tunisia extends its state of emergency for 8 months

(SOURCE) The Tunisian presidency announced Sunday it would extend the state of emergency for eight months.

“The president of the republic decided to prolong the state of emergency in Tunisia until the end of June 2014,” reads a statement from the presidential office.

The move comes one day after talks over choosing a new prime minister to lead the next transitional period reached a deadlock.

Tunisia has been living in the state of emergency since the January 2011 uprising. The authorities have opted to renew it to grant the security forces extra powers of intervention in order to put an end to the rising string of violence that has recently hit the country.
