Sammie Wallace, 37, took a young girl hostage June 17, Midwest City police said. He was killed after a 30-minute standoff, which authorities say was a justified shooting.
The moment suspect Sammie Wallace snatched a 2-year-old girl from a shopping cart inside an Oklahoma Walmart.
Footage of a deadly hostage situation in a suburban Oklahoma City Walmart has been released by police.
The surveillance video shows the dramatic moments of June 17 as wanted felon Sammie Wallace grabs a 2-year-old girl inside the store, Midwest City police said. A police captain eventually shot the 37-year-old to death at point-blank range — action that was justified, according to police Chief Brandon Clabes.
“I mean we waited until the last second to use deadly force,” Clabes told NBC affiliate KFOR-TV on Friday. “No one wants to take a life, especially in the line of duty.”
While cops continue to piece together why Wallace took a hostage, seemingly at random, the video shows the maniac plucking his victim from a shopping cart in the store’s grocery section.

“You could see the knife,” witness Terry Parker told Fox affiliate KOKH. “You could see the baby and you could see the mama.”
Parker was able to block Wallace with his cart until police arrived.
The suspect had the girl in his arms during the half-hour standoff. At one point, he asks for a particular law enforcement officer.
“He abducts the child and hands the cellphone to the mother, and demands she make a call to a Dallas police officer,” Clabes said.
Witnesses described Wallace as being mentally unstable, talking about how President Bush was watching him and describing a connection with the Illuminati, a secret society mentioned by conspiracy theorists.
By the end of the video, Wallace is seen sitting in a chair with the girl on his lap.
Police said he began counting down from 60, moving the blade from the girl’s stomach to her throat, according to KFOR-TV.
The hostage negotiator, who had been crouching in front of Wallace, sprung into action once he believed the child’s life was immediately in danger.
The video cuts off just as Capt. David Huff gets up and fires his gun at Wallace’s head. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The young girl, meanwhile, wasn’t physically harmed during the incident.
Police say Wallace, originally from Dallas, had a rap sheet that included drug- and assault-related charges.
A search of his Midwest City home revealed a three-ring binder and spiral notebook filled with religious writings, authorities said.
Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater has called the shooting justified.
